April Update

June has come and gone. I bought a lot of dirt, but I really think I'm done buying dirt. I also have the consolation that, since most of my garden is in pails that have handles and lids, I can easily move & reuse this dirt next year.

My garden, though it has netted no actual harvest yet, is getting hella big.

That squash photo is a beauty. The composition and the contrast is great. I had to scroll down a bit to see the whole thing, and started out thinking "Why is Lissa taking pictures of the woods for her garden post? Did she go on vacation or... Oh, the squash!"

I totally love your garden. Mmmmmmmmmm, tomatoes.

Your garden looks amazing! I was just looking at one of my tomato plants yesterday and thinking I really need to repot it before it starts fruiting, but I don't have any more pots here. I do, however, have a number of empty kitty litter pails, but I wasn't sure if they'd be big enough. I see you've used them for that purpose; how are they working out? Are your tomatoes determinate or indeterminate? How many drainage/aeration holes did you put in the pail? Did you put holes in the sides as well as the bottom?

Romas are determinate, I believe; I'm not sure about the grape tomatoes.

The pails with the tomatoes are double-stacked to make a mother-earth-news style self-watering planter. There's about 8 drainage holes & one wick hole in the bottom of each.

They seem to be working out pretty well so far. The plants have flowers but haven't yet set any fruit. I'll let you know as time goes on!

Ooh, cool! I really have to try my hand at creating a self-watering planter. That might give me more success with plastic pots. Thanks so much!

So far, we've had no need for it, as it's been raining steadily, but I'll let you know how they work when we hit the dry season :-)
