Greetings

List the ways you do hello -- in person, on the phone, online, in your mind, in words, in gestures, in dreams, in Spanglish, with your lover, with your mother, when you were five, when you're fifty, whatever -- all the ways you do hello.

1. "Hi, ________" (for Mom, Abuela, Cocha [step-dad], Ricky [brother])
2. "Hey, tiny." (little sister)
3. A kiss on the cheek-- not something I initiate normally, but it's sort of a norm here for anyone over 10 to kiss on the cheek as a greeting, especially with family members.
4. A hug-- normally for people I haven't seen in a while, or for my best friend.
5. Normally with my other best friend, we jump right into conversation, skipping the greetings, because neither of us like greetings, so we've decided we'll skip them.
6. Unless it's been a while, then I give a "Hi. What's new?"
7. I'm gonna steal verizonhorizon's "DUDE." I do that when it's potentially awkward-times just to set the tone of the ensuing encounter.

I think that's it. I've done nothing else with enough frequency to mention.

0. "Hey/hi there,'sup?"
1. "Heyyyy~!"
2. "Hi (optional: insert name here)"
3. A wave
4. A smile
5. A hug
6. "Hello?" (phone - standard)
7. "Yo" (phone - casual/I know who's calling)
8. "'ello"
I'm Californian - proper pronunciation is a foreign concept in casual conversation.
9. The dude head nod
Consists of brief eye contact, then jerking chin sharply upwards in direction of addressee. May or may not be accompanied by a verbal "'sup (man/girl/dude/yo/insert name here)."
10. Combo of any of the above

Woooow, I sound really ghetto stereotypically adolescent/Californian. I SWEAR I'M NOT REALLY, I JUST GET LAZY AND DON'T PRONOUNCE THINGS FULLY.

With one guy friend of mine, we always greet each other "HAY GURL HAYYYY" (him) and "SUP BITCH?" (me). With one girl friend of mine, we used to greet each other with air kisses/bisous (for the shits and giggles because some people at our school did that kind of thing seriously) but I haven't seen her in awhile and she's probably forgotten about it XD
