Very interesting perspective on "The Last Duchess". I am not sure if you were in tutorial the day we discussed this poem, but as a group we concluded that there seems to be (more than a) hint of jealousy and perhaps even fondness in the tone of what the Duke is saying. Do you sense that tone at all or did we get carried away in tutorial?
Yeah I could see him being jealous and fond of her - isn't that the way it always goes? Someone becomes an ass because they're not getting the attention they think they deserve, or because they feel inferior compared to someone. I mean, from the way he desribes her, she seems like quite the woman, it must be hard being around someone who seems so unflawed when you are but ordinary.
Interesting post and I must say that I never thought of the Duchess as only a happy and friendly person. When I read it I automatically assumed that she was having an affair or affairs. I think I may be slightly cynical :) Good work! :)
