Things are starting to look up!
I've been meaning to talk about this here but I wanted to wait until things were official. I received a promotion at work! I'm no longer working as a receptionist (which I'm seriously so thankful for, that position was starting to wear me down). I'm now working as a Content Usage Associate! Let me explain what that is, lol.
CafePress is entirely user generated. This means that the Average Joe can open up a shop, upload images, and sell them on a wide variety of products that we offer. The one flaw with this is that means people often upload images that they don't have the rights to (movies, television shows, celebrities). My job is to go through the site and take down the images that shouldn't be on there. We actually do have a number of Fan Portals for certain movies, tv shows, and video games available so that fans can create legal merchandise and sell them. There are strict rules you have to follow, though.
I seriously feel like I was meant for this job. And I really have fandom to thank! Because of all my time online here and on tumblr I have so much pop culture knowledge stored in my head. I can spot so many things that I know are from a certain fandom and shouldn't be on our site, even though I might not be an active fan of said show or movie. All my time on the internet has payed off! :D
The position I'm in is actually apart of the Legal team. It's a small group and everyone is so nice and so much fun to be around. We go out to lunch as a group fairly often and have little wine breaks near the end of the day on Fridays. I already knew all of them from my time as a receptionist. That's how I ended up getting the job, actually. From time to time they would have me help them out with little projects. They always told me what I great job I did and how much they appreciated the help. When the position in their department opened up I don't think they even held interviews. They knew I was interested in advancing into that department and the job was mine. Which felt pretty damn satisfying.
My new boss is the best and she told me how great of a fit she thinks I am and that they're so happy to have me on the team. She also specified the fact that I'm filling a hole because they've never had someone who was super versed in the work of Joss Whedon. FOX has gotten on our ass before with cease and desist orders because fans were uploading designs from Buffy, Firefly, etc. As a side project she wants me to collect screen captures of examples of designs that fans have been uploading to share with the rest of the team. Can you say best project ever?! I know his work like the back of my hand and can easily spot quotes and images that shouldn't be on our site.
The delicious icing on top of this cake is that I received a pay raise. This will help so much with just every day finances. My boss says she's also working on trying to get me onto a fixed salary rather than being still stuck with hourly. Have I mentioned that she's awesome? So yeah, I love life right now and I am so extremely grateful for this change. I feel like this will be the start to a wonderful career.
