    run around the merry-go-round
    screaming at the top of our lungs

we used to hold hands
    back when we didn’t understand what it meant
    to be a boy, and to be a girl

we used to tell each other everything
    from secrets
    to stories, dreams and wishes

we used to say hello
    hi, hey, hullo
    or we’d just wave shyly

we used to dream
    of things greater than us
    and reaching for the sky

we used to think
    that we’d always be together
