http://www.spitfiresite.com/blog/uploaded_images/bnp-spitfire-poster-746505.jpgThe link above is to a poster by fascist political party the British National Party. It's an attempt to cash in on the D-Day anniversary with a symbol, supposedly, of Britain versus the World.
Unfortunately for them, they didn't think this through very well.
The BNP are infamous for ignorance, an image I can only assume they sought to strengthen with this poster. The lettering indicates it is a 303 squadron spitfire. Before I continue, I must point out that one of the BNP's so-called "initiatives" is the deportation of non-British people from the country. This includes asylum seekers and refugees, anyone not white enough for their likings and migrant workers, a lot of whom are Polish.
The 303 squadron was made up of Polish airmen rescued from France shortly before Nazi occupation.
So, an attempt to capitalise on the war by glorifying your enemy. Fail number one.
Fail number two isn't so much down to ignorance and lack of research as a severe case of foot-in-mouth disease. They are using the slogan "Battle for Britain". The aircraft in question, for a start, came into use the year after the Battle of Britain, but the second part of the second point is less solid but much more short-sighted.
They are using an image capitalising on a war against the fascist, homophobic, anti-Semitic, Islamophobic, white-supremacist Nazi regime. The BNP are a fascist, homophobic, anti-Semitic, Islamophobic, white-supremacist party who openly support the Nazi ideal.
To recap the magnificence of this glorious own goal, I'll summarise: a Nazi "cover band" who wish to remove all Poles from the country "for Britain" attempts to advertise itself with the image of a Pole fighting against the Nazis for Britain. So let's celebrate this image: a true icon of multicultural unity with the common goal of ridding Europe of fascist oppression. Over and out.
