Jump over the moooooooooooon

For those of you who didn't know, Rachel and I went to New York over Spring Break for our two year anniversary. We went March 22-24. And I'm just now getting around to writing about cuz I've been busy, ok?!

The trip started off very poorly due to a bitch of a Greyhound driver. You know how when you get on a bus there's signs on the first two rows of seats that say to fill up all the seats in the back first? Well the bus was already 80% full, but Rachel and I were two of the first people to board so we moved towards what looked to be two empty seats in the back. But one was already claimed by someone in the bathroom, so I started back to the front, and of course by then all those empty front seats were filled. So the bus driver starts giving me my ticket back and telling me to get off the bus. Uh no... I bought my tickets over a month ago and they were still selling tickets THAT MORNING. Since when does buying a bus ticket not guarentee you a seat on the bus? So after 10 minutes of yelling at the bitch driver and this other guy who actually turned out to be nice, we wound up instead on a bus headed for Baltimore, where we had to wait TWO HOURS for the bus that would take us to New York. I'm still pissed about it and I'm calling their customer service number later tonight to see if I can't get us some sort of refund.

Once we arrived in the city, we walked the ten blocks or so to our hotel: the Best Western on 48th and 8th. Checked in, went up to our room which was larger than I expected, and got changed to go back out. We went to dinner at John's Pizzaria on 44th Street, which was recommended to me by my manager. It used to be an old church that they converted into a pizza place, so it looks really pretty with the stain glass ceilings and everything you'd expect from an old church. The pizza was really good to so I'd recommend it to anyone in the area. The only thing that sucks about New York restaurants is they never have free refills on soda.

After dinner, we walked down Broadway through Times Square to the theater for RENT. Definitely the highlight of the week for both of us I think. The play was truly awesome. Most people who I know (excluding Rachel) who have listened to the soundtrack a bunch of times but never seen the play have been unimpressed with it. But with me having only heard it a few times, I think I enjoyed it even more, since I could at least sing along to a few lines. Now it's always freakin stuck in my head though. And I keep forgetting to burn myself a copy when I'm at Rachel's, dammit.

The next morning, we got a later start than we'd planned. We walked a few blocks over to Rockefeller Center. Couldn't find the Today Show studio for some reason, even though the show was already over. Did see the Fox News studio though, which is way more important to me. Then we walked a few more blocks to have lunch at Serendipity, from the movie of the same title with John Cusack, which is by the way the best romantic comedy of all time (worst: tie, Something's Got to Give and My Greek Wedding or whatever its called). Anyways, the food wasn't that great and the service was much worse so we left without getting dessert, which was most of our reason for going there.

After lunch we walked around in Central Park for a little while. It was really nice there. Damn the carriage rides for being too expensive. Then we hopped on the Subway downtown and went to see the big courthouses. Mainly because its where Law and Order is filmed. I was afraid I was gonna get shot walking down the steps of the Supreme Court since that's happened on at least two episodes I've seen. It was cool though because we were watching the show a few days later and saw the exact benches that we had sat on.

Then we walked over to the World Trade Center site. Sorry if I sound insensitive, but it wasn't all that impressive to me. Made it would have been more impressive a year ago, but now it just looks like a huge construction site. We got Starbucks and went into Century 21, which is a big clothing store with discounts on designer lines. I bought a shirt (this will be an ongoing theme) and the Adidas shoes I've wanted for a while now.

Hopped on the Subway again and rode on over to Little Italy. Actually we rode to Chinatown, which was kinda scary, and eventually found our way to Little Italy. Ate dinner at Florio's, as recommended to us by Kristi. The food was very good. I got rigatoni cooked in a vodka sauce. Hey it's ok, I'm 21!! Found a closer subway and rode up to 34th Street to do some shopping. Went in Express and bought two shirts on sale, this dressy botton up striped blue shirt and this very metrosexual light blue sweater. Then we went to the original Old Navy store, but they didn't have the shirt Rachel had come for either. But of course I wound up buying two graphic tees and a pair of jeans. Went back to the hotel and planned on going back out to do some Times Square shopping afterwards but wound up crashing instead.

Got an earlier start the next morning and went out to try to buy Rachel's brother a Yankees hoodie, which you'd think they'd have a lot of in New York but only one store did. Also wound up buying ourselves some NYC shotglasses, which we're collecting now so if anyone wants to give us any gifts... O:-)

Grabbed some lunch from McDonalds and checked out of the hotel. Caught our bus home without any problems. They showed Hulk on the bus, which I slept through. Got home on time despite telling my mom we'd be early.

That's all the stories I have from New York. The rest of the week was spent painting Rachel's room, putting together her new bed, playing a really small show in Norfolk, playing a slightly bigger show in Easton but at the least the crowd there is good. By the way, Showcase is returning to Annapolis and Waldorf pretty soon so keep your ears open. Ok that's all from me. Except... Go UConn. And Go Jon Peter Lewis!
