Heechul and Hankyung have only one place where they can be who they truly are: the moon.
ten,
"Get those rocks over there, Hannie. I think Jungsu would want to have a look at them," Heechul says as he picks up a few odd looking specimens of his own. "And be careful of that crater!"
"Honestly, Heechul," Hankyung rolls his eyes as he bounds skilfully past the object of Heechul's worry. "It’s like you've become my mother."
"Well, wouldn't she like to hear that," Heechul says teasingly, but then sighs, remembering the last time he'd paid Hankyung's parents a visit.
Hankyung doesn't respond, and simply smiles bitterly as he stares at their home planet in the far distance.
"It'd give her another reason to hate you," he says as he finally makes his way back to Heechul in a few long strides, enjoying the lack of gravity. However, he takes one step too far, crashes into Heechul, and both of them topple over in a tangled mess of white spacesuits.
"You are such a failure," Heechul says as he scrambles to get up, and checks his suit for any sign of damage. Next he reaches out for Hankyung (who is still lying down dazedly on the ground) and pulls him up, spinning him around as he dusts him down. And then he smiles, and says happily, "But you know I love you anyway."
"I'd kiss you if I didn't have this helmet in my way," Hankyung says sheepishly, and colours a little after that, refusing to believe how cheesy he had become.
But then Heechul laughs, and Hankyung joins in; and both of them relish the feeling of being truly free. On the moon, they were free to be pressed up against each other and not give a damn about being found out; free to declare "I love you" proudly and loudly without being judged-free to be who they truly, truly were.
They always relished their time on this planet, because, sadly, they couldn't be themselves anywhere else but here.
nine,
“What do you think it’d be like,” Heechul says, and takes a bite out of his tortilla back at their space shuttle, “What do you think it’d be like living on the moon?”
Hankyung stares at him, and replies, “Um, we’re already on the moon right now, Heechul.”
“Of course I know that,” Heechul snaps, a little exasperated. “But I was just wondering what it would be like living here permanently.”
“Eeew, it would be so boring,” Hankyung says as he takes a bite out of his own space food. “Can you imagine: eating the same dry food, looking at the same barren wasteland, and doing the same boring things every single day? I don’t think I would be able to take it,” he pauses, and looks at Heechul suspiciously. “How would you be able to take it? There aren’t any shopping malls on this planet!”
“Hmph,” Heechul scoffs, and throws a piece of his tortilla at Hankyung, walking out of the kitchen. “But I’m here! And we get to be together here. You’re incorrigible. I’d throw you out into space, but I’m not that heartless.”
“Aww, Chul,” Hankyung flails; and makes to run after him. “I honestly forgot about that part!”
eight,
Heechul awakes to find himself staring at the familiar white ceiling of his bedroom, and he knows that he must have passed out on the return trip back to Earth again. His whole body feels heavier than usual, and he struggles a little while getting up, but he manages after a while.
“How are you feeling?” says a voice from his right, and Heechul turns his head to find a worried Jungsu staring at him, eyebrows furrowed and lips turned down in a frown.
Heechul bursts out laughing at his brother’s paranoia, but immediately regrets it when his head feels like it is splitting-ahh, the side effects of being on the moon for too long; headaches that lasted for days on end.
Jungsu notices Heechul wincing, and is by his side immediately, holding out his hands, wanting to help where he could. “What’s wrong?” he asks, still looking at Heechul with the same worried expression.
Heechul laughs again, and pushes Jungsu’s hands away, smirking slightly. “Oh hyung,” he says, pulling Jungsu down onto the bed next to him. “Relax, will you? God, I’m fine-I’ve done this so many times, and still you worry. Did you like that moon rock, by the way?”
“It’s not that, Heechul,” Jungsu sighs, and stares at the floor, not wanting to meet Heechul’s eyes. “There’s something else.”
Eh? Heechul thinks, genuinely curious, because Jungsu has never been scared to tell him anything before. What could he be hiding?
“What is it?” Heechul says a little impatiently, and he can see the cogs turning around in Jungsu’s brain, contemplating whether or not to tell him the truth. After a painful silence, Jungsu finally comes to a decision, and looks up to meet Heechul’s anticipating glare.
“It’s Dad,” he says, watching Heechul’s expression carefully, assessing it for any sign of emotion. “He’s found out about Hankyung.”
“Fuck,” Heechul says, and he lets his head falls into his hands-he honestly didn’t need this right now, he didn’t need this drama right now; he didn’t need another quarrel with his parents.
“I’m sorry,” Jungsu says, taking Heechul into his arms and rocking him slightly.
“Thank you,” whispers Heechul, feeling slightly better as he soaked in the comfort that Jungsu was giving him, but the truth was that it didn’t make things any better.
seven,
Hankyung could see and hear everything from where he stood outside Heechul’s apartment, because the window is open, and Heechul’s father wasn’t exactly a soft-spoken man, to say the least.
“You thought you could hide him from us, Heechul?” Heechul’s father is shouting at him, and his hand seemed to twitch now and then, as if he was fighting the urge to slap his son.
Hankyung feels extreme anger at Heechul’s father, but he doesn’t want to make things worse, so he stands outside and keeps watch like a halk. The only reason he hasn’t dashed in to protect Heechul yet was because Jungsu was in the house, too, and Hankyung trusted that Jungsu would protect Heechul with his life, even if it was from Heechul’s father, a man of violent tendencies.
“I never wanted to hide him from you guys, okay?” Heechul screams back, lip trembling slightly-a sign that he was on the verge of brekaking down. Hankyung has to use all his will power to stop himself from storming right into his apartment to take Heechul into his arms and whisk them far away from all this drama.
“We told you we didn’t want you having anything to with him the last time, Heechul,” his mother pipes up from her place on the sofa; she had been so silent and still in the last hour that Hankyung was a little shocked to hear her speak. “You promised us, but now we find out that you have been frolicking around on the moon with him. How are we to ever trust you again?”
“For god’s sakes, I’m an adult,” Heechul cries, eyes getting a little teary now, and Hankyung feels his heart wrench at the sight slightly. He would get Heechul’s parents one day for making his Heechul so fragile-Hankyung knew just how much Heechul feared his parents. “I have my rights. I don’t care if you hate his parents. I don’t care if you hate him. I love him, and I want to be with him-and that’s all that matters.”
Hankyung would have felt touched, and loved, and happy, but he doesn’t have time to do so, because what happens next is over in a second. He is sure that the sound of that slap will echo forever in his mind, and he would never forget the image of Heechul in pain, clutching at his cheek, where a red imprint had already begun to form where his father had hit him.
“Dad, don’t,” warns Jungsu, emerging from his corner, where he had been watching everything. “And he’s right-you guys can’t make him do what you want anymore. We’re both old enough to decide for ourselves.”
“Don’t start, Jungsu-” their father says dangerously, and raises a hand threateningly at Jungsu, which causes him to flinch-Hankyung can’t imagine just how much abuse Heechul’s father must have put his children through to leave them scarred till adulthood. “Get out.”
I'm sorry, Jungsu mouths at Heechul, and runs out of the house, past Hankyung; and even though he has his hands shielding his face, he can still see the tears flowing too freely down his cheeks.
And Hankyung can’t just stand there and watch anymore-now that Jungsu wasn’t around, he couldn’t just leave Heechul alone in there, unprotected. So he charges into the house, takes a bawling Heechul into his arms, and rushes both of them out before Heechul’s father can react.
six,
“I can’t take much more of this, Kyung,” Heechul sighs into Hankyung’s T-shirt, which he has already soiled from crying too much into. “I don’t know why they just can’t freaking accept you, and stop ruining our lives.”
“It’s the same on both sides,” Hankyung says miserably, rubbing Heechul’s back in an attempt to sooth him. “My parents are hardly any better.”
“It’s so stupid how our families hate each other,” Heechul murmurs, fingering with the material of Hankyung’s shirt. “I’m honestly tired of fighting.”
“I know,” Hankyung says, now kneading circles into Heechul’s back. “It used to be romantic at first, like Romeo-and-Juliet kind of romantic, but now… it’s just insane.”
Heechul smirks a little at how corny Hankyung really was, and presses a kiss to Hankyung’s neck. “But we’ll always be together,” he tells Hankyung a little fiercely. “They're not going to break as apart.”
Hankyung laughs, and pulls Heechul’s face to his.
five,
For the next week, Heechul stays over at Hankyung’s apartment, and they are both grateful that Hankyung’s parents are away. Jungsu pays them visits every day, to update them on Heechul’s parents, and sometimes brings along his boy friend, Youngwoon.
Five days into the week, Jungsu barges into Hankyung’s apartment, looking as if he had just run a marathon, and tells both of them anxiously, “They’re going to go to the police!”
“What? Who? Slow down, Jungsu, take deep breaths,” Hankyung tells him, but he can feel himself start to panic-this couldn’t be good.
Jungsu doesn’t respond, and seems to be incapable of speaking, so Youngwoon sits him down on a chair gingerly and begins to explain.
“Your father is going to the authorities,” he says, looking at Heechul sadly, and then at Hankyung. “He wants to report Hankyung for sexual harassment.”
“What?” cries Heechul incredulously, and clenches his fists so tightly that his knuckles turn white. “No, that’s insane. They can’t…”
“Yes, they can,” Youngwoon tells him seriously, “and they will. He’s told Jungsu to tell you that it’s either that, or you stop seeing him.”
“I’m so sorry,” Jungsu finally pipes up from his chair. “I really tried to stop him.” And Hankyung sees the red marks on his hands, and feels extremely guilty and grateful at the same time.
four,
“I’ve got it all sorted out,” Hankyung tells Heechul the next day, looking so calm and serene that Heechul wants to question his sanity.
“How?” Heechul asks him, a little doubtful.
“We’re going to the moon,” Hankyung announces, taking Heechul’s hand in his, squeezing it tightly as he attempts a brave smile. “And we’re never coming back.”
three,
“I understand, Heechul,” Jungsu says, tearing up after he learns of their plan, and turns to Hankyung and takes his hands, saying, “Take care of him for me, will you?”
“Of course, hyung,” Hankyung says as sincerely as he can, and surprises Jungsu by hugging him tightly. “Thank you for everything."
two,
“This is the last time you’re going out into space,” Heechul’s father tells him, and Heechul knows the real message behind those words, that this was going to be the last time that he was letting him to see Hankyung. “And when you get back, you’re living with us.”
“Of course, Dad,” Heechul says, not missing the look of relief that crosses his father’s face, and feels a little guilty for what he is going to do. “And… I love you and mum,” he tells his father for the first time in ages, “I’m sorry.”
His father’s smile is a little sadistic, and he says a little victoriously, “Its okay, son. Glad you finally came around.”
Heechul just nods, and feels a little sadistic as he relishes the thought of how his father would react when he learns the truth behind his sudden apology; that he wasn’t sorry for loving Hankyung, but because he was leaving them forever.
one,
They can feel their oxygen supply running low-it’s been three weeks since they first touched down, and they should have made their return journey three days ago, but of course they hadn’t-they weren’t ever going back there.
It had started getting hard to breathe the day before, and they both know that their time was running out. It wouldn’t be long before they died, but they didn’t mind, because they were able to spend their last days together, without any worries or interruptions-they were alone, truly alone, and that was more that they could ever ask for.
They had spent the past weeks roaming about the moon together, watching out for shooting stars and meteor showers, pointing out moon rocks that Jungsu would have probably liked to have, and bouncing dangerously near craters.
And honestly, to both of them, being on the moon has never been so beautiful.
“I think it’s about time,” Heechul says a little breathlessly as both of them lie on the floor of their space shuttle together.
“Are you scared?” Hankyung asks him, feeling his chest constricting bit by bit every minute; he was suffocating, and strangely, it felt more comforting then scary.
“Of course not,” Heechul replies in a whisper, because it’s getting hard too hard to speak properly. “I love you, Hannie.”
And Hankyung takes Heechul’s hand in his, and both of them smile contently, waiting together for death to take them.
take off.
