Sequel to Fireflies. In which Sungmin meets Donghae, Kibum is an anchovy and Zhou Mi is a firefly.

“Sungmin, Sungmin, Sungmin!”

Sungmin grumbles as he shifts a little in his sleep, trying to shrug off whoever that was trying to wake him up. His sleepy mind guessed that it was Kyuhyun, trying to get Sungmin to go out on one of his crazy early morning strolls as per usual.

“Sungmin, Sungmin, Sungmin, wake up, wake up!”

Sungmin turns over and keeps his eyes tightly shut, refusing to let alertness take him-he was going to sleep a little while longer, because he didn’t want to face the world just yet.

“Hyung!”

And then Sungmin thinks, wait, Kyuhyun never calls me hyung, and opens his eyes, thinking that this had to be important.

“Oh god, finally, hyung! I’ve been calling out to you for ages.”

Sungmin wonders if he is dreaming, because, if his eyes weren’t deceiving him, the person that had waked him up was Donghae-Donghae with his sparkling eyes and ever dazzling smile, Donghae who had been brutally killed when he had gone out to look for food.

And then Sungmin remembers what had happened, and he feels his heart sigh softly as he tries to give Donghae the brightest smile he can muster.

He was dead, and even Donghae’s cheerful chatter couldn’t take away the loneliness that was eating at his heart.

***

“So… where are we, exactly?” Sungmin finally asks Donghae, once they shared warm hugs and greetings, and settled down by a lake nearby.

Being dead, Sungmin feels, was a strange thing- he had imagined himself to be somewhere high in the clouds now, looking down on everyone below him, and perhaps even frolicking with angels (for he believed that he had been a relatively good person in his life).

But no, he had found himself in a relatively normal place-it looked like he was still in Seoul to him, and this gives him the hope that perhaps he was still alive, but then he remembers he can see Donghae, and feels a little guilty for letting his heart sigh. He doesn’t remember Seoul being this dim and dull though, so Sungmin can’t really decide on his location.

“I honestly don’t know,” Donghae tells him, and Sungmin wonders if he ever stopped smiling. “I’ve just been walking around; looking for some form of life around here, and then just now you sort of fell out of that tree over there.”

Sungmin marvels at Donghae’s bravery-he’s pretty sure that he’d have freaked out, being alone in an unknown land for such a long time.

“I fell out of a tree?” Sungmin asks incredulously.

“Yeah,” Donghae nods, and gestures to a large tree in the distance that struck Sungmin to be achingly familiar. “That one over there.”

Sungmin stares at it hard, and tries to screen through his memories for a hint of why it looked so hauntingly familiar.

And then it hits him: of course it looked exactly like the huge tree that the fireflies dominated, the huge tree that Kyuhyun would make him watch when he was down, the huge tree where he had triggered off a huge minefield-thinking back, he can’t believe how stupid he had been; he had almost caused Kyuhyun his life-he hoped that wherever he was, Kyuhyun was alive, and happy.

“Ehm, so, I’ve been meaning to ask,” Donghae’s nervous voice pulls Sungmin out of his trance, and for the first time in his life, he sees Donghae frowning. “How’s Hyukjae?”

Of course he had been worried about Hyukjae, Sungmin thinks, annoyed at himself at how self-centered and insensitive he had been.

“Well, you know, last I saw him, he was crying a lot,” Sungmin replies as honestly as he can, and almost regrets his decision as Donghae’s frown begins to deepen. “But I mean, that’s expected, right? You guys were really close friends.”

Donghae sighs, and stares out into the distance, and Sungmin is sure that he can read his mind-they had been more than close friends.

“God, it’s so annoying being dead, you know? He’s just weeping his eyes out about me and I can’t even tell him to stop,” Donghae clutches at Sungmin’s hands suddenly, desperation gleaming in his eyes.

“The thing is, are you sure we’re dead?” Sungmin says, looking around the lonely, barren land. “This isn’t how I imagined the afterlife to be.”

“I know,” Donghae nods, and Sungmin knows that he was as scared as him.

***

“Let’s go for a walk,” Sungmin suggests, pulling Donghae up as he stands up himself, and begins to walk in a random direction. “We’ll walk till we find out the truth about this place, Hae, don’t worry.”

Donghae’s face lights up as soon he registers Sungmin’s plan, and begins skipping forward as well. “I’m glad you’re here, Min hyung. It’s been so lonely!”

Sungmin smiles.

***

“So, how did you die, hyung?” Donghae starts another conversation after both of them start their solitary track in an attempt to find a trace of humanity around.

“If I died,” Sungmin says, linking arms with Donghae, forcing both of them into a skip, “The minefield probably killed me-I was catching fireflies, and I stepped on one of them, can you believe it? Silly me! I hope Kyu’s alright though-if he died too, it would be my fault.”

“Oh, those stupid landmines,” Donghae nods with understanding, patting Sungmin gently on the back. “They nearly took away Hyukjae’s legs before-thank goodness he got treatment in time.”

They fall silent after that, and Sungmin thinks about how naturally Donghae speaks of Hyukjae-as if he was still alive, and had Hyukjae by his side.

He decides then that he needs to find Kyuhyun. Whether he is alive or dead, Sungmin vows to stay with him till death, and never to leave his side.

***

They had been walking for ages now, and had gotten nowhere-in fact, they find themselves back in front of the tree that Donghae had claimed Sungmin had fallen out off, which stumped both of them, as they are sure that they had been walking straight all along, and not in circles.

The only good thing about being dead (Sungmin has pretty much accepted the fact by now) was that he never tired-he felt no need for rest at all.

“Damn it, we’re back here,” Sungmin grumbles, and sits down, frustrated, refusing to believe that they had wasted so much time for nothing (but then again, what was time in the afterlife?).

“I always ended up back here too, no matter where I walked,” Donghae sighs, plopping down next to Sungmin.

“Maybe we’re looking for the wrong things,” Sungmin mumbles, speaking his mind.

“What do you mean?” Donghae questions, fingers playing with a few flowers around them.

“I wish I knew,” Sungmin says, feeling a little confused himself.

***

Both of them don’t feel like walking around anymore, so they sit down by the lake and begin weaving grass (because honestly, what else did they have to do around here?), up and under, up and under.

Halfway through their grass basket, Donghae suddenly stands up and points at the lake, jumping up and down excitedly like a kid high on sugar.

“Get up, get up, hyung!” Donghae cries, grabs Sungmin’s arm and actually manages to get Sungmin standing up next to him. “It’s anchovies, its anchovies! And they’re actually jumping out of the water!”

Sungmin laughs as he watches them with Donghae, shooting out of the water at great heights and diving back in with not much of a splash. “I didn’t know anchovies could jump like that,” he comments, smirking slightly.

“Neither did I!” Donghae squeals, and then pauses, looking thoughtful. “Hyukjae always brought me anchovies when I was down; never failed once in cheering me up.”

Sungmin ponders that for a while, remembering how Kyuhyun always told him to look out for fireflies for comfort. God, Kyuhyun. Where are you?

“They look like they’re calling out to me,” Donghae says next, tilting his head a little to the left and squinting slightly, as if he would be able to see better like that.

Sungmin follows his gaze back to the anchovies darting in and out of the water again, and decides that they certainly looked like they were flapping their fins as if to say come to us, Donghae, come to us!

“They do indeed,” Sungmin nods his agreement, a little unsure of what to expect next-he kept his fingers crossed that Donghae wouldn’t jump into the lake with the fishes and leave him, though.

“I’m going to go see what they want,” Donghae tells Sungmin in an almost trance-like manner and pads over towards the lake, leaving Sungmin to follow after him a little warily.

When they are in rather close proximity with the jumping fishes, Donghae halts suddenly, and so does an anchovy (Sungmin rubs his eyes several times to make sure he wasn’t imagining this-because it had stopped in mid-jump), and both of them seem to have some telepathic connection for a while-Sungmin doesn’t know how disturbing it was to watch Donghae stare into the fish’s eyes so intensely.

Sungmin stands there in an uneasy silence before Donghae finally breaks eye contact with the anchovy and turns back to look at Sungmin, looking happier than usual.

“They said they could lead me to Hyukjae,” Donghae cries, grabbing Sungmin’s shoulders and shaking him. “They knew I was looking for him!”

Sungmin gapes, and finds himself staring at Donghae disbelievingly. “Um, the anchovy knows where Hyukjae is?”

Donghae nods his head so much that his face gets a little blurred.

Sungmin told himself that he should’ve known that strange things happen in this land (after all, the sun never set), and shrugs his shoulders, and asks Donghae, “Can I come along?”

Donghae turns to the anchovy still lingering in the air, and shares that creepy eye contact with it again. However, even Sungmin doesn’t miss the anchovy shake his head slightly after a while.

Donghae pouts, and tells Sungmin, “Kibum says no, and that you’re supposed to wait for your own guide to lead you.”

Sungmin feels his mouth drop again. “Kibum? It has a name?”

And then he looks at the anchovy, and he actually meets its eyes this time. Watch out for the fireflies! I’ll take care of Donghae, don’t worry! he hears it say in his head, and Sungmin knows that its best not to question the insanity of things already.

“Bye Hae, stay safe,” Sungmin smiles, waving slightly, though feeling a little upset that he had to stay back alone. “We’ll meet again!”

“Bye hyung, I love you!” Donghae grins, and Sungmin watches sadly as both boy and anchovy dive into the lake, swimming further and further away from him.

***

Sungmin doesn’t know how to keep track of time in this place, wherever he was. The sun never set, shadows never moved, and he never felt the fatigue that would usually take him by night time.

He thought that he would’ve been scared, being in this strange land alone, but he finds himself abnormally serene most of the time, and he never felt fear at all.

He figured that being here was okay, and he would wait for the fireflies to show up for as long as he needed to.

***

Five grass baskets and two grass dresses later, Sungmin finally spots a little flicker by the firefly tree.

He runs over excitedly, but by the time he gets there, he can’t find it anymore.

But of course he keeps hopeful, and this time plants himself right below the tree and waits for the next sign of life.

***

He is working on his second pair of grass sandals when the whole tree suddenly bursts out in light, shocking him out of his wits. When he has calmed himself down, he walks out a little to face the tree, and a lone firefly floats down and perches itself onto his nose. Sungmin is certain that he can see its beady eyes stare into his own.

Hi there, it says, and Sungmin can hear a little bit of cheekiness in its voice.

Take me to Kyuhyun, Sungmin tells it eagerly, excited that they had finally showed up, excited that he was finally going to find Kyuhyun again.

Hmph, straight down to business, I see, the firefly huffs.

Well, okay, fine, I’m sorry. What’s your name? Sungmin questions.

Zhou Mi, it tells Sungmin, still sounding a little ticked off. But it’s okay, I understand your urgency. Let’s go, then!

And then, to Sungmin’s utter surprise and delight, the whole horde of fireflies leave the tree and are carrying him up into the sky, guiding him on his way.

***

So, I’ve always wondered, where were we just now? Sungmin asks Zhou Mi curiously as he runs his hand through the clouds they are passing by.

Oh, that was the waiting area for guardian angels, Zhou Mi tells him casually, which leaves Sungmin thoughtless for a while. Gets lonely there though, there’s rarely more than two people at one time. You were lucky you ran into Donghae, actually.

Eh, what? is all Sungmin can respond with.

Your Kyuhyun’s new guardian angel! Seriously, for such a kind-hearted person, you can be really daft, Zhou Mi grumbles. I sent in my resignation letter the moment you died-god, that kid has the worst of moodswings.

Eh, huh?

You give him hope, Sungmin, it’s the natural order of things here, Zhou Mi explains. It used to be me, cause I fly around flickering my ass off and stuff, and I don’t know why but this makes Kyuhyun happy-but then he met you, and I swear you practically radiate hope for him.

Am I going to be a firefly? is the only thing Sungmin responds with, even though he had a thousand other questions circling his head.

Well, sadly, Zhou Mi responds, and Sungmin is certain he can hear a snigger in his tone. Since you know, you’re replacing me. You get to duplicate yourselves as many times as you want to though, cause we’re so small. All the fireflies carrying you now are just doubles of me!

Do I have to really take up this job? Sungmin thinks, wrinkling his nose a little in disgust.

You get to be with Kyuhyun forever, responds Zhou Mi, and Sungmin blushes, wondering just how much that firefly must have seen.

***

Zhou Mi brings Sungmin back to the refugee camp, where they are treating Kyuhyun for his various injuries. Sungmin can’t express how much his heart bloomed at the sight of seeing Kyuhyun again, though he still wanted to beat himself up for landing Kyuhyun in such a sorry state.

He looks to Kyuhyun’s right, where Hyukjae is nursing him. Sungmin smiles as he notices a small tank by Hyukjae’s side, containing a little anchovy no longer than his hand. Donghae, he thinks happily.

This is when I go, Zhou Mi says, and his duplicates disappear, dumping Sungmin onto the ground. Take good care of him, Sungmin. I’ll see you around.

And Sungmin suddenly finds himself as a firefly, tiny and flying just by Kyuhyun’s bedside. He flutters over and perches himself onto Kyuhyun’s cheek, wishing so hard that he could peck him.

But then Kyuhyun opens his red eyes (Sungmin’s heart hurts-had he been crying?) and stares at Sungmin. It takes a while, but Kyuhyun finally smiles, and Sungmin’s heart soars-he would heal Kyuhyun’s heart if he needed to, bit by bit. He would give Kyuhyun hope.

And he would wait for Kyuhyun to be able to find him again.

A/N: If you guys wanted a sadistic (i have no idea why I thought of this, probably because Kyuhyun is supposed to hate fireflies now) here:

And Sungmin suddenly finds himself as a firefly, tiny and flying just by Kyuhyun’s bedside. He flutters over and perches himself onto Kyuhyun’s cheek, wishing so hard that he could peck him.

But then Kyuhyun's eyes widen, and Sungmin doesn't know how to react because the anger in his eyes scare him. Kyuhyun begins to move, reaching out for a roll of newspaper, and Sungmin moves away in a panic-but he can't move fast enough, and the next thing he knows, he get hit hard, and loses his consciousness before he hits the ground.
