Blood dripped from the sword, bright and wet and filled with a thousand empty promises. Drip. Drip. The sound nearly drove him mad.
The beautiful creature stared blankly at him, lips as warm and red as the blood that trailed from its belly, still inviting even in death. The last of its seductive magic lingered in the air like the memory of a passionate kiss. He knew it was only a trick. He knew that the creature would have killed him as soon as he opened his arms to embrace it, but the knowledge did nothing to soothe the ache in his throat or to stop the world from blurring with bitter tears.
Numbly, he knelt to wipe his sword on the too-green grass.
