Hey Juliet? I think you're fine. You really blow my mind...

Blame an old friend on facebook for this one. For good or for ill, it's entirely her fault. I originally replied to a status of hers regarding opinions on Romeo and Juliet, writing a short paragraph. The mistake I made was going back and reading it afterwards.

It isn't that it was a bad paragraph, mind you. Especially since I was really only half- ( Read more... )

Of course, you're right. In classical genre, nobody thought it was anything but a tragedy.

Love you waxing eloquent.

True enough, but seemingly everyone (and as I pointed out, even myself for a time) sees it as a romance. A little sad, really.

As soon as I started seeing it this particular way, I fell in love with the play despite my best intentions. I'm okay with that.

It feels good to be lit-nerdy. Happy that someone enjoys it! *hugs*

I have always hated Romeo and Juliet and it's probably in part to others calling it a romance. However, as an English Major nerd, I felt compelled to read this and I agree wholeheartedly with the statements and arguments you have made. I never viewed Romeo and Juliet as anything but tragedy. After reading your post, the story sort of grows on me. It's much deeper than simply a love story of two people not meant to be together.

To me, I feel the same way when others call The Great Gatsby a love story and view Daisy and Jay as a great romantic couple. I view this as a tragedy as well and by the end, you can't say they were a great love story/couple. I cringed when I saw Daisy and Jay as inspiration for a wedding and a story of never ending love. Why would anyone use these characters for a wedding? It seems as a bad omen to me.

I'd always viewed the play in a cynical manner. Once I stopped seeing it as being Romeo and Juliet's story, and began to see it as Romeo and Juliet's story as a snapshot of Veronian society and its failings, that changed everything. I'm so glad I was able to help give you a slightly different view (or something) of the story.

Daisy and Jay as an epic, beautiful love story? Using them as inspiration for a wedding?
...WAT.
No, seriously. What?

This is really fascinating, and making a lot of sense to me. Huh. Thank you for sharing.

Would you mind if I linked this on my LJ? Some of my Hunger Games peeps might find it interesting. THG uses a Romeo & Juliet metaphor.

By all means, go for it! For one, I'm pleased you found this interesting, and for two, I'm honoured you found something in it worth sharing.

And just for the record? My THG post prompted by yours is now at 76 comments and I'm praying that no shipper will ever find it, or I'll find myself on fandom_wank faster than a blink. ;)

I have never thought of R&J as romantic, despite the presence of a romance. It's a tragedy, just as labeled on the tin! However, your breakdown here is completely wonderful (And man, do I EVER want to slap the Nurse when she backs out of helping Juliet. Every. Single. Time.)

It's been a very tiring (but excellent) week at Disney for me; deeper thoughts are currently impossible. I hope you are enjoying the start of your summer, and I would love for you to stick the complete links in here for #s 2 and 4.

Thanks for the compliment! All of this feels self-evident to me (now) to the point where I almost feel silly going through it. Me, personally, I was always more angry with the Friar. Now I always feel like slapping both.

DISNEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEY! I'm so happy you had a good time. I haven't been since I was an itty bitty thing.

Here's the full musical, subtitles and all.

As for the Quebecois film, you're going to have to give me a couple days to upload it. I'm heading to the Coast where I have a much better internet connection and unlimited upload/download. The file works best if you have VLC media player, seeing as the subtitles are a separate file that you have to open while playing the video. Unless you've got a different method or what have you. Point being, I'll get it to you.

Not a problem doll!

I'm just trying to find a site to upload the film and subtitles for you. They're too big for sendspace. Again, just give me time.

(Though if you have recommendations for filesharing...)
