I have a question for everyone. It is obviously inspired by the literature meme. What three books would you recommend that people read? They can be fiction/non-fiction/biography/academic/ whatever.

just because that's where I've been, lately:
Water, A Natural History, by Alice Outwater Ecology of a Cracker Childhood, by Janisse Ray Copse, by Kate Evans (this one is a comic)
All of these are short, engaging, and have been incredibly important to my consciousness. Outwater's book is very clearly and plainly written, and interesting to anyone who likes animals, natural history, or lives in a city with a water treatment plant. Ray's book is just incredibly beautiful, plus it's about people and culture in close relation with a specific ecosystem. Copse is a autobiography and a history of an activist group, in comic form. And the art is great.
