Baskin Robbins/ Kaleidascoop and TCBY litsa2 April 7 2004, 07:08:11 UTC
BASKIN ROBBINS/KALEIDASCOOP & TCBY. First off, kaleidascoop is a stupid name. Fortunately thier ice cream is very good.

You know, I don't have much to say about either BASKIN ROBINS or TCBY. Their ice cream is pretty standard for its price range. I don't have a preference. They're really good though. Creamy, doesn't melt quickly, lots of flavors, etc.

Now as far as soft-serve goes, TCBY is of medium quality. I think the worst soft serve I've had comes from Golden Corral. TCBY is much better than that, but it is not as good as some other brands that I will mention later. No, TCBY is good, but I think the fact that most of their soft serve is fat free frozen yogurt makes it hard to evaluate. Sorry, my TCBY evaluation is not so good. If you have thoughts on TCBY, just reply to this comment.

DAIRY QUEEN litsa2 April 7 2004, 07:14:24 UTC
DAIRY QUEEN. DQ has great soft serve. It is surprisingly smooth. It is fun to eat because you are surprised by the absolutely grit-free texture and the whiteness. So they get 5 stars when it comes to texture. As far as taste goes, their single flavor, vanilla, is very mild. A lot of ice creams try to make their vanilla taste very vanilla bean-like, but Dairy Queen keeps it simple. Unfortunately DQ only has the one flavor. They rely heavily on toppings to flavor their soft serve. DQ with toppings are good, but the soft serve's fundamental lack in flavor makes all of their frozen treats seem uninteresting after a while. Your tounge gets too numb to taste anything, and then you're wishing you had just gotten a small.

MCDONALDS litsa2 April 7 2004, 07:17:43 UTC
MCDONALDS. McDonalds has slightly lower quality ice cream than TCBY. Flavors come in chocolate, vanilla, or the two swirled together. Their ice cream has good flavor, I guess. And it's not airy or watery. I'm not too opinionated on McDonalds. They are good and cheap.

the milkshakes litsa2 April 7 2004, 07:26:14 UTC
I forgot to mention McDonald's milkshakes. At one time they were good, but then recently they changed the recipe or something. Now they taste too milky. They taste almost like if you made a Bluebell milkshake. Like I mentioned earlier, Bluebell is already too milky (as opposed to creamy), so a Bluebell milkshake would not be very good. Well, Mcmilkshakes are not good either. Oh, and they say that they're "triple thick" now, but that's a lie.

The last time I had McDonald's ice cream, it seemed like they had changed the formula and it had a lot of ice crystals in it. It made it less creamy and it had sort of a rough texture. Maybe I just got a bad batch, but I wasn't impressed.

CHICK FIL A litsa2 April 7 2004, 15:48:23 UTC
Yeah, chick fil a's soft serve has a generally gritty texture too. Maybe those are ice crystals, but it still has a good flavor. In San Angelo they would put green dye in it.

WENDYS litsa2 April 7 2004, 07:22:45 UTC
WENDYS. Wendys get points for cheapness. They probably have the cheapest soft serve out there, so cheap that they can't really call it soft-serve-- it's just "frosty." Frostys taste good. The thickness is constantly varying though. Sometimes Wendy's frostys are almost like really thick milkshakes, but other times it is as stiff and scoopable as soft serve. Unfortunately, frostys melt very quickly and they are pumped with lots of air. I used to get stomach aches after eating frostys until I adapted.

The ice cream at Walgreens in little boxes is good. Try it.

Also, go to Culver's and Sandy's for custard cones. Sandy's has butterscotch, too.

Amy's is often too powerful for me. I can't finish a bowl or cone generally, although their vanilla ice cream in the coke shakes at Metro is good.

I've never tried frozen custard.

Amy's ice cream is like, all cream. Yeah, it's really heavy. Some people don't like it because of that. I would like it except it's waaaay to expensive. May as well buy soy ice cream if I'm gonna spend that much.
