We had a "first line challenge" in English class waaaay back when I was about 12 or something. The teacher advised us that the first line should interest the reader and make them want to read more. I lost all faith in my English teacher when the "winning" entry was "One day we were playing tennis and we hit the ball and it didn't come down." I mean, we were 12, but still.

My entry? "Thirty million dead."
