It depends on how she does her hair. Does she relax it, is it natural, is it in braids/twists or dreads? Any of these can be low maintainance, some more than others, and all of them can be professional. It's just on how you want your protagonist to look like, it's not any sort of personality quirk or anything.

If she is natural, what does her hair look like? Sure her hair could just be wavy while natural, but even when it's real, people will be doubtful because that's so uncommon to rare, even with a white parent. Is it curly? Very tightly curly? Is it fro-y? And even after that, is it very fine, medium, or coarse? Fine fro-y natural hair tangles easily and breaks off. Medium and coarse hair are a bit more durable but they still need certain kinds of care.

When you know all this, then you can ask what she did for the wedding. Sorry to get all tl;dr up in here, but it really all depends on how her hair is in the first place, and her regimen and all.

I second black_hair_etc though.

OK, after looking through black_hair_etc, nosing around some more on the Web, and meditating on the character, I think she prefers a natural look, and normally wears her hair in twists: letting it down under most circumstances and putting it up when doing lab work. Her wedding ’do is an elaborate bun, like this. (How far down would that woman’s hair reach if it was let loose?) Based on other Web research, it seems like this would withstand being slept in (cf. surgicalsteel above), so in the morning she could just unwrap it and apply (spray on? rub in?) conditioner.

Right? Am I missing anything else?

(I’m not sure about how to classify her hair’s curliness or coarseness because almost all of my resources here are pictures of styled hair, so I have to start from how it looks and work back from there.)

With twists like that, they're done wet, so it would really depend on how much shrinkage she has. While wet, I would say bra-strap length to mid back, dry it would be anywhere from chin length to shoulder. That bun, if you're talking day after the wedding, I doubt she'd take it down. With that sort of style, it could last for three weeks with gentle washing (she'd use a stocking cap and wash over that) and maintenance (mixture of jojoba oil and olive or grapeseed oil on the twists and scalp). The appeal of that style would be to look beautiful on your wedding day and spend the honeymoon worrying about your hair less. She'd keep it in for about a week, since she'd be spending more time vacationing and not wanting to sleep in a satin cap ( ... )
