Chapter 233: A Surprise and Plan
Madison: Oh, Shelby! You are getting married? How wonderful!
Shelby: *smiles* Thank you.
Alex: *to Toby* Whoa…first Roxanne, now you. Awesome!
*Toby smiles*
Madison: Do you have a ring yet, Shelby?
Shelby: Not yet. We are going shopping this weekend to take a look and maybe pick something out.
Toby: *clears throat* Actually…Shelby…
*Toby fishes in his pocket for something*
*Toby pulls a ring out and shows it to Shelby…a little shyly*
Toby: I have a ring…you don’t have to take it if you don’t want to…but my mom sent it to me after I told her we were going to get married. Her mom gave it to her, but she didn’t have any daughters to give it to so she thought you might like it…
Shelby: Oh…Toby…it’s beautiful!
Toby: It doesn’t have diamond or anything…it’s just a gold band…
Shelby: I don’t care, it’s perfect.
Toby: *uncertain* Are you sure?
Shelby: Absolutely…put it on me.
*Toby puts the ring on Shelby’s hand*
Shelby: A perfect fit! That’s a good sign…
Toby: You like it?
Shelby: I love it…forget about the ring shopping, okay?
*Madison leads Alex away*
Alex: Hey, why are we leaving?
Madison: I think they need some time alone…come on.
Alex: Oh…yeah…okay… *is reluctantly pushed by Madison*
Toby: I…I can get you another ring. You don’t have to wear this one just because of my mom.
Shelby: Toby, I want to…and not just because of your mom. It’s…special…and I do love it.
Toby: *smiles* I’m glad. But…uh…I think we scared Alex and Madison away.
*They laugh*
Toby: So…have you thought about where you want to get married? We should start planning…
Shelby: Well…I have an idea…but I don’t know…
Toby: Tell me.
Shelby: You’ll laugh…
Toby: Try me.
Shelby: Well, I want to get married in my home town.
Toby: That’s not strange…
Shelby: Wait for it…in my home town, every May, there is a Flower Festival to celebrate flowers, obviously, and things that grow…nature, that kind of thing…
Shelby continues: …It’s at the peak of the blooming season and the festival is at a local park. I used to go every year growing up and when I was teenage I had a random thought once about how fun it would be to get married there…I never saw anyone else do it…
Toby: So far, this doesn’t sound unusual.
Shelby: There’s more…see, there’s this path in the park. It’s called Hope Trail. It’s named after someone but I always thought it as hope for things you want, the path leading to happiness and joy. I was thinking, we could gather the wedding guests in the park and then you and I would lead them up Hope Trail…our path to happiness and joy…
Shelby: At the end of the trail is a rocky hill, it’s called Eternity Peak. It’s named that because from there is a marvelous view of the entire park and it’s really beautiful, especially during the Flower Festival…it’s like seeing forever. We could get married there, a symbol of our eternal love.
Shelby: *feeling a little embarrassed* I know…it’s silly…
Toby: No…not at all…it sounds amazing. Just like something you would do.
Shelby: *smiles* After we were married we could go back down the trail and plant a tree as part of the Festival tradition. Trees live for a long time…hundreds of years…it could be like another symbol of the beginning of our life together and how long we want it to last.
Toby: You’ve put a lot of thought into this…
Shelby: *laughs* I swear I didn’t! It’s just a random idea I had…we don’t have to do it.
Toby: I think we should.
Shelby: You’re just saying that.
Toby: I mean it; I think it’s a great idea. If you want to do it, then I’m with you.
Shelby: I’ll talk to my parents and see if it’s something that can be arranged.
Toby: Just one question…what do we do if it rains?
Shelby: We’ll get wet…it’s just water.
*They laugh*
To be continued...
This ring surprise is based on my own engagement. My husband asked me to marry him in a moment of spontaneity...he had no ring. We planned to go shopping for a ring together so I could help him pick it out, but he surprised me by buying one without telling me and surprising me with it, it was like being proposed to all over again. :P It wasn't a family ring, like the one in this story, but it was special to me because he picked it out on his own.
An interesting note about Shelby: She's a huge nature lover. Not in a "save the environment" kind of way, she just loves nature to the point of near worship. She finds it very symbolic and an important connection to her own life, which is why she sees symbols she relates to herself all over in nature. So this idea for her wedding is very typical of the kind of thing she would think of and want to do. Toby is so used to her doing this by now, it doesn't surprise him...in fact, her love of nature is one reason he loves her so much, he thinks it's fascinating.
The flower photo is one I took a few weeks ago when I was out in a nifty garden (not at my house) taking photos. The path photo is just an area between our yard and out neighbors yard that has always looked like a path to me. The hill is just a big giant rock in our front yard. :P
My son's braces went on just fine, but yesterday was a rough day. Today he seems much better, although still in a bit of discomfort. I think he'll be perfectly fine in a day or so and he doesn't seem to mind the braces (aside from the pain part) too much. He's still only eating jello and other soft stuff but I'm sure that will get better, too. :D
