Summary: Would he, spring’s child and greatest creation, survive in the darkness and coldness of the Underworld?
Jaejoong squirmed in his seat, and Yoochun eyed him carefully. He looked around, made sure that no one was around and leaned forward. His eyes were glinting with mischievousness, and he eyed Jaejoong knowingly.
“So?”
“So what?” Jaejoong questioned back, trying to keep calm. He leaned away from Yoochun and drummed his fingers onto the table. He looked away, noticing that his mother was in the distance, tending to the flowers in the field.
Yoochun leaned forward, “Did you have sex yet?”
Jaejoong jerked back sharply and glared at his best friend. “Don’t talk about it now. My mother is here. She will kill me, and she will kill Yunho if she hears anything about it! Don’t you know how important he is to me? If she finds out, she won’t let me see him again, and I will -“
“Oh, so your mysterious lover’s name is Yunho?” Yoochun questioned, his eyes alight with amusement. He clasped his hands together and looked at his best friend with a smirk on his face. “Isn’t he the…”
Jaejoong scowled. “Don’t you dare say a bad word about him or I will castrate you. I do not care if you’re my best friend, but if you -“
“I’ve heard he’s got a large -“
The skittish god tried to get out of his seat in a rush, but he ended up crashing onto the floor in his haste. His face turned beet red, and rather than trying to get up, he gave up and buried his face into his knees. He could hear Yoochun stepping around the table to see him, and his best friend eventually knelt down beside him.
“Stop teasing me.” Jaejoong mumbled. He titled his head to look at Yoochun, and his best friend was obviously holding himself back from bursting out into laughter. Jaejoong narrowed his eyes and scowled.
“Judging off your reaction…it must be quite -“
Before Yoochun could finish his sentence, Jaejoong shoved his face away and fled the room.
o-o-o
Tonight, they weren’t doing anything.
Jaejoong was contentedly sitting, humming a song as he ran his hands through the softness that was the other’s hair. Yunho’s eyes were shut, and were it not for the fact that he was speaking, Jaejoong would’ve thought that he was asleep. His mind was busy running around with his own thoughts, and he’d tuned Yunho out for the past couple of minutes.
Where was their relationship going? It was almost a year to their first meeting, and not once had he ever stepped foot in the Underworld. It was obvious that Yunho was reluctant to bring him to the lower levels of the Earth, but Jaejoong didn’t know how he could show the other that nothing mattered more than their love. He didn’t care if the other gods accused him of being foolish. He was more than willing to leave everything behind.
More than anything, he was tired of being treated like a child that was unfit to make his own decisions in life.
Yunho’s eyes opened, and Jaejoong blinked at him.
“I’m sorry,” Jaejoong mumbled, a blush dusting across his pale cheeks. “I wasn’t listening to you again.”
“I just asked you if you wanted to go home.”
The young god shook his head and continued to run his hands through Yunho’s hair gently. It was something he couldn’t stop doing, and seeing as Yunho was not complaining about it, Jaejoong didn’t see any reason to stop.
“I don’t want to leave…you.” Jaejoong finished, making sure that he held Yunho’s gaze in order to prove a point. He let out a soft sigh and leant down to press his lips against Yunho’s. “Don’t let me go home.”
“It is your home.” Yunho murmured, his voice filled with longing as his breath ghosted against Jaejoong’s face. “And because of that, you must return. Your mother would search for you, and the consequences of your departure would be terrible. Besides, you belong here -“
“You are here too -“
“But not permanently. You know that I return to my domain as soon as you leave my side.” Yunho moved to sit up, and when he was up, he turned to face Jaejoong. He knelt down in front of his lover and cupped his cheek. “We both know that…that you do not belong in the Underworld with me…”
“So what, are you saying this won’t last?” Jaejoong whispered. “Are you saying that…that -“ His face hardened, and he stepped away from Yunho. Before Yunho could pull him back, he shoved the other away roughly.
“Don’t touch me.” He hissed, his voice low and venomous. Anger was coursing throughout his veins, and he wanted nothing more but to hit Yunho at that moment.
Yunho said nothing, and Jaejoong glared at him.
“I am not some toy for you to use whenever you are here.” Jaejoong choked out angrily as he kept his eyes fixed upon Yunho. “Stop treating me like a child! I would gladly go to the Underworld with you! I am anything but a child, and I refuse for you to -“
The god of darkness took a step forward, and he reached out to grasp Jaejoong’s wrist tightly. “I am not treating you like a child, I am simply well aware of the horrors of the Underworld. You have not seen it, you have not experienced…but if you so wish to see the Underworld, then I shall bring you now.”
In a matter of seconds, they were enveloped completely by darkness. Jaejoong held onto Yunho’s hand tightly, and when he opened his eyes, he stepped back. The Underworld was completely unlike anything he was used to. The entire world was shrouded in a faint yet dreary glow, its radiance so much unlike the world that he knew and had called home for so many years.
To his ears, he could hear something faint in the background. He did not know what it was, but it made him feel cold inside. His skin shivered, and his heart pounded in his chest - it was too much for him to take.
“Is this what you want?” Yunho questioned, “Do you want to live here?” He gestured to their surroundings, “Do you think that you belong in this world?
Jaejoong’s eyes met his, and the fear in them was enough to give Yunho the answer he’d been expecting. A flicker of disappointment made itself clear to Jaejoong, and Yunho shut his eyes before he transported them back above ground. He took a step away from Jaejoong, and he stared at his lover with unfeeling eyes.
“Yunho, I am -“
The god of darkness shook his head, “Enough has gone on this night.” He looked at Jaejoong, and once again, his mask fell slightly to reveal the sadness in his eyes before it went back up. “Do not make claims that you cannot fulfill.”
Before Jaejoong could apologize, the other god had disappeared.
o-o-o
The sun could not warm the coldness that had taken over him.
Jaejoong brought his knees close to his chest and refused his urge to cry. He had spent so much time getting the other god to trust him, and he had shaken that trust completely. Without a doubt, he was sure that Yunho now thought of his love as worthless. Jaejoong buried his face into his knees - he was such a fool. He’d been so convinced that he would be able to dispel Yunho’s ears, but instead he’d only made them worse.
He’d wandered back to the forest several times, trying to find Yunho so that he could apologize, but the other refused to see him. Jaejoong pulled a flower out of the ground and crushed it tightly in his palm, his frustration and sadness simply overwhelming him completely. The memory of the sadness in Yunho’s eyes made his heart clench in his chest, and to know that he was the cause of it all…
Was he just like the others now? Did Yunho think of him to be the same as the gods that shunned him and thought of him as a monster? The possibility of Yunho placing him with the others made his heart feel like it was being wrenched by some unknown force. Jaejoong knew he wasn’t like them, but the question was, did Yunho know that too?
Jaejoong lifted his eyes and stared at the vast sea of green before him. The plants swayed, flower petals danced to the tune of the breeze, and the sun showered everything with a heavenly glow. The beauty of spring and life was a part of him, but would it always be that way? Was he truly capable of leaving it all behind?
Would he, spring’s child and greatest creation, survive in the darkness and coldness of the Underworld?
A memory flashed to mind - of Yunho and his delicate touches, his warm smile and his caring words. No, not everything that was a part of the Underworld was unfeeling and cold. There was beauty to be found, and just as he’d patiently broke down the intimidating walls that Yunho had held up, he felt like he could push away the outer wall of terror that the Underworld had.
Jaejoong’s heart ached terribly in his chest, and he buried his face into his knees, hoping, wishing and praying that Yunho would come back to him just as the night would return to embrace the Earth each day.
o-o-o
“You’ve been disappearing quite often honey, and I find it worrying.”
Jaejoong looked up from the book he’d been pretending to read and blinked at his mother innocently. He tilted his head - an action he knew that she found adorable, and pursed his lips in thought. His mother frowned at him, worry obviously etched onto her features, and it didn’t seem like his scheme was working.
His mother set down the basket that’d been in her hands onto the table and walked over to him. She fixed the curtains of the cottage and then turned to look at him properly. She crossed her arms and tapped her foot, and Jaejoong waited for her to voice out whatever she was meaning to ask him.
“Where do you go? I don’t sense your presence.”
“I study with Changmin,” Jaejoong lied calmly. “I’ve become keen to find out more about the world, and -“
“The world is a terrible place honey…you shouldn’t wander far from here.” His mother chided, her frown deepening. She cast her gaze outside of the window and sighed deeply. “There are numerous bad characters, and I wouldn’t want you to be mingling with any of them. You’re much too good for them.”
“Mother -“
She turned her head and interrupted him, “I want you to stay here. Okay? At least for the next few days…I’ve heard that the god of the Underworld will be lurking around here, and he is such an unsavory character -“
“He can’t be that bad mother,” Jaejoong cut in. He held his mother’s gaze, and shock was written all over her features. “After all, I have not heard a single bad thing about him, and he does not -“
“I don’t want you interacting with him Jaejoong, and that is final.” His mother turned away from him sharply and picked up her basket. She began to make her way to the door, but as soon as it was halfway open, she turned around again. “I have an idea.”
Jaejoong shuddered.
He didn’t like it when his mother had ideas.
“What is it mother?” he choked out, trying to keep his voice light and happy. After all, whenever he made his mother unhappy, there was always hell to pay.
“I know this most wonderful god. I think I should set you two up.”
Jaejoong froze.
His mother beamed, assuming that Jaejoong’s silence meant that he had no protests against her idea. She lifted her basket up, “He’s most handsome Jaejoong, I am sure you would like him. After all, you do complain to me quite often that you’re lonely. If you had someone, I am sure those feelings would disappear. Don’t leave the cottage today, I’ll ask him to come over for dinner tonight.”
“Mother -“
“No Jaejoong, this must happen.” His mother interrupted. “I would love to see you smile more again, and I know that the beginning of a new love is the key to that. He will be coming tonight, and that is final.”
o-o-o
He had no choice in the matter, and he and Insung spent numerous hours of each day together. His mother would let Insung follow him around in the fields, crushing the flowers with his ungraceful footsteps and talking relentlessly about his importance as god of the sun. It was true that he was radiant, not just in aura, but in appearance and behavior. He had a bright smile, he was most handsome, and he was lively but it was all too much for Jaejoong. It was like staring directly into the sun - blinding and uncomfortable.
“I think we should go to the lake,” Insung suggested as he watched Jaejoong tend to the flowers. He pulled off a flower’s petals idly, “Or perhaps you would like to visit my home?”
Jaejoong was well aware of the sexual nature behind Insung’s suggestions, and he ignored them. He walked away from Insung and began to head to another part of the garden, hoping that the other would leave him alone. His mother had constantly compared him to a flower, one that would bloom under Insung’s bright affections, but he could feel himself withering from all the attention. Insung was a total contrast to Yunho, and the more he flirted and bothered him, the more Jaejoong wished that Yunho would see him again.
“I love your garden. It is a reflection of life and all its charms.” Insung said as soon as he’d caught up to Jaejoong. He pulled a flower out of a bush and twirled it between his fingers. “You however my dear, are the fairest flower of them all -“
“Thank you,” Jaejoong cut in before he pursed his lips and took the flower. He turned away from his suitor and looked up at the flame tree that was now in full bloom. Vibrant scarlet flowers decorated the tree’s branches, and he let out a small admiring sigh.
No, he could not be as fair as nature when he could feel himself dwindling without Yunho. He certainly did not feel beautiful, and Insung’s empty compliments did nothing to make him feel better. The lascivious way the other god looked at him was unsettling and rude. Whenever Insung touched him, it sent a shiver up his spine and made disgust rise to his throat.
He was well aware of what Insung wanted, and it certainly wasn’t love.
“Honey!”
Jaejoong turned around, and his mother bounded towards him and Insung, her dark hair flowing behind her. A bright smile decorated her face, making her all the more blooming than she already was. “We must celebrate!”
“Celebrate what?” Jaejoong asked. He glanced at Insung, and the confident way the other was grinning made him feel all the more disconcerted.
His mother glanced at in Insung, “Did you not tell him yet?” She shook her head, an amused smile on her face, “There is to be a new festival in Insung’s honor, and he asked for my permission that you be his date for the event. I said yes of course -“
“What about my permission?” Jaejoong asked hollowly. He kept his gaze on his mother, his anger flaring. “Does what I think not matter at all to either of you? I refuse to go. I will not subject myself to be used like this.”
“Jaejoong!”
He shook his head and stormed past Insung and his mother, ignoring his mother’s pleas for him to come back.
o-o-o
Jaejoong maintained locked up in his room, not bothering to answer the door or to unlock it. He knew he being immature, but there was no other way for him to find any sort of escape from his mother. He refused his mother’s attempts to guilt trip him into going, and he simply shut his eyes and dreamed that he was elsewhere.
More often than not, he dreamed he was with Yunho.
It still hurt him that Yunho had not come to see him, but he understood. The other god could not approach him in public. With his mother hounding his every move, and with practically all of the gods being attentive to who he was with, no doubt there would be an eruption of drama if ever Yunho came near. His mother would shut him up in a far away cottage, and Yunho would be forced to return back to his domain.
Jaejoong stared out his window, his eyes looking out at the fathomless night that had draped itself over the horizon. His heart felt a longing to return to its embrace, Before he could think of his mother possibly being out in the corridor, he unlocked the door and made his way out. He made sure to walk quietly, and as soon as he was out, he began to make his way to the forest.
The night was quiet, but mystical. It was like the stars shone brighter in the sky, and there seemed to be something pulling him in the direction of where he’d met Yunho so many days ago. His footsteps were quiet, and as he neared the forest, he suddenly realized that there was someone following behind him.
He turned, and it was then that he realized Insung was a few paces behind him. Jaejoong stood still, unsure of what to do, and Insung continued to walk to him. It was only when the other was close that Jaejoong realized that Insung was drunk off whatever wine had been present at that night’s festivities.
“Where are you going?” Insung questioned. He glanced past Jaejoong’s shoulder to look at the dark forest before he turned his eyes back to Jaejoong. “Why are you wandering around by yourself?”
“Why are you here?” Jaejoong asked, trying to deflect the attention away from himself. He took a step forward, “You should go home -“
Insung pushed away his hand and frowned. His eyes narrowed. “I meant to see you tonight, and I saw you leave your home, so I followed. Why are you here? Where are you going?”
“I just want to be alone -“
Before Jaejoong could step back, Insung had taken hold of his wrist. He pulled Jaejoong forward, “I’m taking you back -“
“I don’t want to go back!”
It was as if Jaejoong’s rejection had hit Insung hard, and the other god’s eyes narrowed. His grip on Jaejoong’s wrist tightened, and he pulled the other closer, “Do you know how sick I am of it all? Never have I put up with such behavior for so long. If I want something, I get it.” he hissed, his voice low and threatening. “I’ve had it with your games, you selfish child.”
He forced his mouth down onto Jaejoong’s, and Jaejoong promptly turned his head away in order to stop the rough attempt to kiss him. They struggled, Insung trying to force Jaejoong into a position of weakness, but Jaejoong fought back. Eventually Jaejoong hit Insung hard enough to make the other god fumble back, and before he could recover, Jaejoong darted away and made for the woods.
He could hear Insung running behind him, shouting for him to come back, but Jaejoong refused to stop running. His heart was pounding wildly in his chest, and although the branches of the trees whipped against his face and he stumbled in the darkness, he didn’t stop. He didn’t know where he was going, but he knew he had to get away - from his mother, from Insung, from the only world he had really known.
Jaejoong collided into a hard figure, and then he fell back onto the ground, fear clenching his heart. He raised his eyes, prepared to scream, but the scream died in his throat when he saw who was standing before him.
“Come with me.”
Yunho held out a hand, and Jaejoong reached out and grasped it tightly, his eyes not believing the sight before him until their fingers were linked together. In a matter of seconds, they were gone.
o-o-o
Jaejoong opened his eyes, and they were out in their usual glade. He looked up at Yunho, and before the other could pull his hand away, Jaejoong tightened his grip on it. They looked at each other in silence, Jaejoong bit his lip, unsure of what to say.
Yunho forced his hand out of Jaejoong’s, and before Jaejoong’s heart could fall, he moved his hand to sweep back the other god’s hair. “What did he do to you?” Yunho whispered, “Are you -“
“I’m fine.”
Jaejoong searched Yunho’s eyes, desperate to know the other still loved him. He looked at the other expectantly, waiting for a confession. It had been so long since they had seen each other that Jaejoong could feel a familiar tug of desire. He reached out to touch Yunho’s face, his fingers tracing the other’s defined jaw.
“You know…that you were being unfair, right?” Jaejoong questioned, anger slipping into his voice because of the lonely weeks of frustration that he had dealt with on his own. “Just because I was afraid, that does not mean I will always be afraid. It is normal to be afraid of the unknown, isn’t it? If I stayed with you, would you not chase away those fears away and help me survive in the dark?”
There was no answer, and Jaejoong’s jaw clenched. “My mother has been forcing me to see someone lately…” His eyes hardened, and he stared at Yunho, a look filled with determination. “I don’t want to see him, but she won’t listen to me. Won’t you do something?”
“Stop trying to chase me away.” Jaejoong whispered, his voice filled with emotion as he spoke. “Don’t you know me? I am a spoiled and stubborn child…I’m not going anywhere.”
“Do you still love me?” Jaejoong questioned, his voice as light as air. He leaned forward, his lips only centimeters away from Yunho’s. “I…I still -“
Yunho closed the distance between them, and Jaejoong felt all the breath in him escape. Familiar hands cupped his face and pulled him closer, and Jaejoong could feel him sinking into the other man’s embrace. He parted his lips willingly for Yunho, and it didn’t take much longer for their kisses to become more passionate. Jajeoong clung to Yunho tightly as Yunho ravaged his mouth, licking, sucking and dominating him completely.
After he was content, Yunho moved away, kissing Jaejoong’s pale neck. Jaejoong moaned softly as Yunho marked him, biting and sucking at his skin without any more restraint. Jaejoong could feel himself coming undone, the pleasure was too much and he didn’t know how he could keep standing. Jaejoong grasped at Yunho’s hair tightly as the other god bit at him roughly, and a long moan of pleasure escaped his lips. He yielded completely to Yunho, allowing the other to do as much to him as he wished.
It wasn’t about apologies, it was about surrender. Jaejoong wanted Yunho to see that he trusted him, that he wasn’t as afraid as Yunho thought he was. This love they had, although a secret and forbidden, was one he wanted just as much as Yunho did. He had already surrendered his heart, and it was now the time for him to surrender his body.
Jaejoong pulled away from Yunho and took off his clothes slowly, pulling the fabric off his body in a teasing manner. He bit his lip shyly as soon as he was completely undressed, and the way Yunho gazed upon him only made the arousal in his body even worse.
“Touch me,” he breathed out.
Yunho claimed him once again, pulling Jaejoong close and gently setting him upon his pile of clothes. He kissed Jaejoong reassuringly, the kiss slow, loving and searching. Jaejoong kissed him back, shyly and apprehensively, but filled with love nonetheless.
When they broke apart, their lips gleamed with saliva in the dark. Yunho pressed another reassuring kiss on his lover’s forehead before he made his way down the other’s body. He sucked at Jaejoong’s nipples but did not linger, his hunger craving for something else.
Jaejoong parted his legs willingly, but when Yunho came close to his hardened cock, he quickly drew his legs back shut. Yunho looked back up at him, and Jaejoong was blushing hard. He bit his lip, and Yunho’s fingers danced along his thigh. The god of the Underworld left feather light kisses upon his skin and massaged Jaejoong’s legs, coaxing him to part them.
As soon as he’d managed to calm himself down, Jaejoong opened his legs. Yunho pressed a kiss against his inner thigh, and a shiver ran up his spine. His hands wandered and kneaded at the soft flesh that was now accessible to him, and Jaejoong moaned in response. It did not take much longer until Yunho’s hands reached Jaejoong’s erection, and when they did, Jaejoong bit his lip hard in an attempt to be silent.
Yunho licked up from the base of Jaejoong’s cock to the tip, and a loud moan escaped Jaejoong’s lips. His eyes flickered down to Yunho, and the other man met his gaze.
“You need not be quiet. No one will hear you here.” He reached out to squeeze Jaejoong’s waist reassuringly, “We are far away from them. This is our sanctuary.”
Jaejoong smiled, and as soon as Yunho was sure that he was more relaxed, he returned to the task at hand. Yunho took his hardened cock into his hands before he opened his mouth and took it in. Jaejoong moaned, the warmth and feeling of it all was simply indescribable. He writhed underneath Yunho, squirming slightly as Yunho began to suck him hard. Jaejoong panted heavily as Yunho continued to suck, and the sight of his cock disappearing into Yunho’s mouth made things only worse for him. He could hardly believe what was happening, the indecent sounds coming from Yunho and escaping his lips.
He was losing himself in the feeling of Yunho’s lips being wrapped around his cock, and if this was what his mother had warned him about in the past, this indecent tainting of flesh, then he would gladly have himself tainted over and over again just as long as Yunho was the culprit behind it all.
Jaejoong could feel himself close to coming, and he tugged at Yunho’s hair to tell him that. The other god met his hooded gaze and ignored him, promptly returning back to tasting as much as he could of his lover. Jaejoong felt his face heat up and his climax neared, but after a rough suck, he came into Yunho’s mouth.
He watched in a haze as Yunho swallowed most of his release, a bit of it trickling past his lips and falling back onto Jaejoong’s skin. Jaejoong lay before Yunho, a panting mess, and the other god climbed back over Jaejoong to kiss him gently. Yunho nuzzled at Jaejoong’s neck, and just as he moved to kiss behind Jaejoong’s ear, his clothed erection brushed against Jaejoong’s skin.
The touch awakened Jaejoong out of his stupor, and he nervously reached out to cup Yunho’s concealed erection. Yunho hissed, and he turned his eyes to look at Jaejoong. The younger god smiled apprehensively and kissed Yunho.
“Tonight, you make me yours.” He whispered against Yunho’s lips as he tugged at the other god’s clothing, “I will have it no other way.”
Jaejoong assisted Yunho in getting rid of his clothing, and as soon as he was completely undressed, he coaxed Jaejoong back against the ground. He whispered loving words, and when he brought his fingers close to Jaejoong’s lips, the other reached forward to suck them without a single demand to escape from Yunho’s lips.
As soon as they were slick enough to Yunho’s liking, he reached his hand down to stroke himself in the hopes it would make things easier for Jaejooong later on. Jaejoong watched as Yunho touched himself, and Yunho looked up, his eyes meeting Jaejoong’s.
“It’s going to hurt,” he murmured, “I do not…”
Jaejoong leaned down to kiss his forehead. “I won’t break, don’t worry.” He smiled at Yunho and laid back, waiting for Yunho’s fingers to prepare him for what was to come. His eyes screwed shut as soon as the first finger entered, and he let out a muffled groan of pain. He was so tight, and it was uncomfortable to feel Yunho’s finger in him. Another soon followed, then a third was was added, and the pain was more than Jaejoong had thought it would be. Yunho murmured comforting words into his ears, and as the process took longer, the pain gradually faded off into merely a dull ache that he could forget about in the midst of all the pleasure.
Although Jaejoong had thought that he could handle it all, as soon as Yunho’s cock entered him, he let out a loud groan. He could feel himself being stretched upon further than he had been with Yunho’s fingers. His breath escaped his lips as Yunho began to push in deeper, and his nails sunk into Yunho’s skin as he adjusted to the pain. After a few minutes of being settled, Yunho soon began to push, thrusting into Jaejoong at a pace that got faster and faster.
Jaejoong could hardly breathe his breath coming out in short pants as Yunho continued his assault upon his body. The feeling of Yunho’s thrusts had him moaning out shamelessly, desperate for more. He could feel himself leaving behind his past innocence as he whimpered for Yunho to push into him harder and faster. He pressed back against Yunho’s cock, and Yunho could not deny him of his wants, so he quickened his thrusts and brought Jaejoong closer and closer to his peak until he reached it and came between their bodies.
He was boneless as Yunho continued to thrust into him, and as soon as Yunho had reached his peak, Jaejoong whimpered from the overstimulation. Yunho sagged on top of him, and when he moved slightly, a soft moan escaped Jaejoong’s lips. Yunho pressed their foreheads together then kissed Jaejoong languidly before he pulled out of Jaejoong and slowly got up onto his feet.
“Where are you going?” Jaejoong questioned softly, his body still weak.
Yunho knelt down and pulled Jaejoong up. The young god of spring hooked his arms around Yunho’s neck, and the god of the Underworld picked him up bridal style. Jaejoong shut his eyes and buried his face into Yunho’s chest, uncaring of where the other was taking him.
Regardless of where they were, he knew Yunho would take care of him.
o-o-o
Yunho stood far away, his ears listening for the sounds that he knew would be coming. A sound of a horn rang clear in the air, and his jaw clenched. It seemed as though he’d underestimated the amount of effort that Jaejoong’s mother would put into finding her son.
“You cannot stay here for much longer.”
Jaejoong looked up from where he was lying down. His body protested as he sat up, and Yunho walked over from where he had been to kneel down beside him. He took hold of Jaejoong’s hands, “They’re looking for you. I can hear them.”
“Why can’t I stay?” Jaejoong whispered. “I don’t -“
Yunho silenced him with a chaste kiss before he pulled away. “It is not yet time for you to leave this world. Your mother wreaks havoc the longer you are away -“
“She will learn to -“
The older god sent Jaejoong a doubtful look. He shook his head, “You and I both know that your mother is not someone that is easily persuaded. She loves and devotes herself to you as if you are her entire world. If I take you from her at this moment, she will never forgive me, and she will exert her anger upon those who are undeserving of any blame or punishment.”
A sad look crossed Jaejoong’s face, “You are not at fault. You do not deserve such hate and revilement.” He clenched Yunho’s hands tightly, “Do not care for her words, she is blinded by -“
Yunho shook his head. “I do not care for what she thinks, but the matter remains that I cannot bring you with me yet. We need more time.”
“Is it because I am scared?” Jaejoong asked softly, his voice barely above a whisper.
The other god shook his head and gazed at Jaejoong with a look filled with patience and love. “I understand your fear. I am sorry that…that I allowed my impatience to cloud my judgment. I will take care of you, if ever you were to…”
Jaejoong’s lips curved into a small smile, “Thank you.”
“I must consult with The Fates before I can bring you down with me, but as soon as I am finished, I will come back. Now is not the time to be hasty. We have proven enough to one another, but I need to know how I will handle the troubles that are to come with your departure from this world.”
“I did not mean to bring you trouble -“
Yunho shook his head and kissed Jaejoong gently. “I would risk anything for you, and you should not be allowed to remain here, in this world of stifling greed. When I take you with me to the Underworld, I wish for it be permanent. I refuse for anything to tear apart what you and I have so carefully built.”
The god of the Underworld held Jaejoong’s gaze, his look intense and burning with passion. “I will return for you.”
Jaejoong held onto Yunho’s hands tightly. He felt even younger than he was, and all the confidence and strength that Yunho had given him seemed to have deserted him. It took him a while before he could raise his eyes to meet the other’s, but when he did, he spoke. “You promise?”
The god of the Underworld brought Jaejoong’s hands to his heart. He pressed their foreheads together, and they were so close that Jaejoong could feel Yunho’s warm breath ghosting against his face.
“I promise.”
o-o-o
Jaejoong left the glade, his clothes back in place but mussed. The bruises that Yunho had left upon him had healed would heal, but the other kind of mark that he had received had become a part of him. He was no longer the innocent and pure god of spring any longer. In the one day that he and Yunho had spent with one another, so much had changed within him.
He waited for whoever would come to his rescue. His eyes moved over to a spot in the darkness, and he could see Yunho watching him. It did not take long for someone to find him, and Jaejoong allowed himself to be wordlessly pulled far away from the forest.
But just as he was about to be pulled back into the light, he turned his head and met Yunho’s gaze.
“I will wait for you.” He whispered, before he was pulled out of the darkness behind and re-entered his world of life and light.

His mother refused to let him out of her sight. He was being coddled by her constantly, and she was even more overbearing and possessive than usual. She kept him within her watch at all times, and as they tended to the fields together, she would not let him stray far from her.
Jaejoong stared down at the flower petals in his hands, and when a soft breeze blew them away, he turned his head in the breeze’s direction. He stood up and glanced at his mother, who was busy chiding a nymph who’d ruined a geranium shrub. He began to make his way to the edge of the fields, and when he saw a familiar figure standing in the fields, his heart nearly leapt out of his chest.
It is time.
He heard his mother shout for him to stop, but he ignored her and quickened his pace to reach Yunho before his mother could reach him. A beautiful smile spread across his face, and nothing would hold him back from grasping the future that he wanted.
Yunho held out his hand, and Jaejoong took it.
Together, they descended into the darkness.
