First, need to note that we started a batch of beer on Friday. By "we" I mean me, and the Eldest, and her friend P - it was a home schooling project! In a month, we'll check it and bottle it, which is exciting. The plan this time around is to start a second batch almost immediately, because the first batch didn't take nearly as long as I had ( Read more... )

FWIW, one of the reasons I *do* pledge to my NPR station is because of those Saturday afternoon opera broadcasts. Because, where else am I going to hear that?

The other reason I pledge is because four years ago I answered the call with the flat statement "I will not give one red cent to NPR until I am certain it will not go to Juan Williams, Barbara Hagerty, or Mara Liasson."

Well, they fired Juan Williams, so I felt morally obliged to at least pledge a third of what I used to -- and tell them why.

I like the idea of a latte tax, though! Maybe I should chip in a quarter every time I eat arugula, too...

I certainly don't begrudge opera fanciers their Saturday opera - it keeps y'all off the streets, buying librettos and such from shady street corner opera sellers, for one. I'm just saying it would be nice if, given that my city is blessed with two stations, one of them played something that I wanted to listen to while the other one plays opera (or jazz). On Saturdays, they run "On the Media," but it's at 9 in the morning - on Saturdays, I don't want to be functional at 9, but I'd be interested in listening to On the Media at noon - so why not jazz at 9, and not-jazz at noon?

A big hefty tax for each Volvo sold and for each body piercing given, too...
