Slippery pegs of doom

But before I start ranting, many wishes to filker0 for a very happy birthday!

(rant on)

For the best (or, in fact, worse) part of the last hour I have been trying to tune the cello, after replacing the string that broke a couple of weeks back. The tuning pegs and their holes are worn down quite a bit, so the pegs keep slipping back and de-tuning. They ( Read more... )

For harps with tapered tuning peg holes the application of a little rosin to a slipping peg is sometimes suggested. Makes the peg a little bit stickier...

Wahey, you have a cello now! I was just bemoaning on RMF that a cello was one instrument we didn't have in UK filk. Have you tried superglue? No, I don't mean glue the pegs in the hole, but I remember hearing from a jazz bass player (double bass, that is) that you can put a thin film of it round the pegs, let it dry /thoroughly/ and then re-insert them and that provides the little bit of extra thickness. Check with the music department at uni, they may have suggestions...

Would it not work out cheaper and easier to hold it at arms length in theface of the music shop guy and say, "Make this work!"

I feel quite honoured to be remembered in your posting!

I'm now well settled in to my 45 cubic years (that's 3 years * 3 years * 3 years -- since units multiply, well...). I've had the numerical age for a month now (I was born on May 22, 1959), and it seems to fit just fine. I won't be returning it. Your caution in waiting until I decided to keep it (I only had 30 days return privilege, afterall) was quite well founded.

*hugs* and thanks for the good wishes!

I'm not a pedant... well... okay I am virtually THE Pedant

Pedant (n) from the Latin Pete-ant meaning similiar to The Pete (see also Qfyd). One who picks faults nd corrects others.

But 3 years * 3 years * 3 years is 27 cubic years.

You're in fact roughly 3.55 cubic years

Sorry about that... I'd intended to say 3 * 3 * 5...
