From time to time, in the quiet moments Robert‘s life wasn‘t being torn apart once again, he wondered if she found some kind of perverted pleasure in him knowing. He assumed she did, why else would she let him know there was more to it than coincidence?

Robert hated the twisted things her mind came up with. Why couldn‘t he just have a normal life? But no, she would never let that happen, it wouldn‘t be interesting enough. She liked him being there for her entertainment, ready to comply with her every whim, no matter how much he inwardly objected. She could decide what his life was like, while he could only guess about who she really was.

For that matter, Robert couldn‘t even be certain that she was really a she, although all evidence pointed to it. After all, how many boys thought up a world in which the hero rides a sparkly unicorn to rescue a princess in distress?

Robert couldn‘t keep count with the times he had had to do just that. From those adventures, he was also able to guess what her name was; based on the assumption that there was a reason that the princess with whom he rode into the sunset was usually called Ashley.

It had been a while since he had had to rescue Princess Ashley from the clutches of yet another evil dragon. More recently, his surroundings had changed into what he assumed could be called “a modern society”. The dragons had been traded in for evil cheerleaders and he himself found himself to be the attractive quarterback of a school football team.

To be honest, Robert almost preferred the dragons to the drama he had to go through nowadays. There were only so many times that helping Ashley triumph over the schemes of the cheerleaders were even remotely interesting, but Robert simply had no possibility of escaping.

Once in a while, he wondered how it was even possible that while he was doomed to do what she demanded him to, he could still develop his own thoughts full of rebellion and dislike towards her. Perhaps it was simply something that had escaped her whimsical mind.

After all, it wasn’t as though she generally paid much attention to details. The houses Robert passed on his way to school were fuzzy, faded silhouettes at best and the people he saw were usually faceless and nameless. Sometimes, the rooms in his house would switch around randomly, as did the names of many of the people surrounding him.

Once, Robert had owned a dog, one of the few things in his world that were beautifully detailed. Snuffles was a large dog with long white fur, floppy ears and two black spots on his forehead. One day Snuffles had been able to perform tricks such as rolling over onto his back on command and the next day, the dog had simply disappeared without an explanation. Instead of going to look for Snuffles (although Robert guessed it would have been pointless anyway), Robert had been sent on another agonizing date.

However, the inconsistency of his life wasn’t even the worst thing. Much more terrifying were the times in which Robert was just left standing in the middle of whatever he had been doing before, nothing in his entire world moving. Not able to do anything, he could almost feel himself fade into non-existence.

After this happening, Robert was always more than happy to comply with doing whatever he was made to do, but he could tell that the times he was forgotten were becoming more frequent.

That was when Robert noticed something changing. He suddenly noticed that all of the trees had colors, not only those that he sat under when on an especially romantic date. The rooms he lived in had more than the most basic furniture, the people he interacted with had faces and names and his actions began making sense rather than just being random plots strung together for the benefit of whatever character happened to be called Ashley at the time.

At first, Robert was simply glad about the sudden changes, but it didn't take long for him to start wondering about the reasons. Only after some time did he remember a different character that had kept reappearing, especially back in the days when he still had to fight dragons. Quite often, the evil character telling the dragons where Princess Ashley was hiding was called Katie. Occasionally, she was portrayed as Ashley's little sister, always trying to steal her precious jewelry and other belongings. In a flash of inspiration, Robert understood that perhaps, Katie had gotten hold of Ashley's almost forgotten stories and had decided that amongst all the cheesiness they contained, at least one of the main characters was worth saving.

As this realization hit Robert, he broke into a smile. Perhaps the recent improvements were only the beginning.
