The Skyway is great...as long as you know where to get off. It's especially cool at night, all the smoke and glowing red from the factories, it seems like you're on Venus...or in Hell. I once made a wrong turn trying to get ON the Skyway from the city and drove along South Shore Drive for 20 miles or so, not much fun in the summer with no AC and windows rolled up.
Isn't it an incredibly boring drive? Anything that's interesting near I-90 is not visible from the road, excepting downtown Cleveland and Chicago.
Did you at least get some venison out of the deer thing? Mmmm venison. Can't remember what it tastes like.
Good luck with jobs, and if the first one sucks, well you've actually got choices so you don't have to keep it for 10 years like I did...
So Becky said that Earl said that the guy from the co-op in Chicago is waiting for you and Jereme to go apply at his store. Guaranteed job!! And then I tried to call you but maybe your phone no longer works. Hm. See you in a couple weeks.
And Barry, why were you driving with the windows rolled down if you had no AC? Because it's South Shore Drive? Sketchy??!
Yeah...I know I should call that guy. I'll do it soon. I don't know. For some reason I'm not itching to work at another Co-op. But I should at least call. Sigh.
I'm glad you got lost in the ghetto, I did that in NY when I went to visit Marco, and I'm a dipshit-looking paler-than-pale college boy with a backpack on. It actually made me realize two things: a) it's safe in the daytime and b) it's a lot more interesting than the areas directly around MSG and the like, the "nice" neighborhoods.
Where does your current neighborhood lie on the continuum? Good luck with jobs!
My neighborhood is a 'safe' neighborhood in that there are signs of gentrification, with the number of condos in development and the Starbucks. However on the third night we were here I woke up at 3 a.m. to the sound of three gunshots. Found out the next day "gang members" (according to the press) shot at each other, missed, and killed one teenage girl and injured another. All just 50 feet from my apartment. Yet my friend who has lived in this neighborhood for over a year says that's the first time anything has happened since he's been here. But still, it feels pretty darn safe.
I had more or less the same thing happen with the apartment I lived in in Evanston...heard gunshots one night not far away, it turned out to be a driveby mistake and some kid got whacked (you have to say "whacked", you're in the city now).
Also I got a gun pulled on me by a near-comatose crackhead once...it was scary for about 3 minutes until I realized he was just paranoid and thought I was following him...and that he probably wasn't capable of hitting me from 10 feet away. Kidding. It was fucking scary.
Don't kid yourself about safety though...there are many places you shouldn't walk around alone, or even with your strapping man, really late at night. I was pretty lucky myself, but I've had more than one friend who wasn't (none murdered, but plenty mugged, robbed, cars broken into, and a couple raped).
Or you could just get a piece, a gat, a rod...that's the Chicago way.
