Character: Megara
Fandom: Disney's Hercules movie. However, I will be including her past from the television series.
Character Notes:
History:
What little is known of Megara's past offers quite a bit of foresight in to her character.

In her teenaged years, she met and fell in love with Greece's Head Hunk, Adonis. It is presumed (largely according to fanon*) that Adonis falls under some kind of incredibly life-threatening situation and Megara, bent on saving her boy's life, offers her soul to Hades in exchange for Adonis' life being saved. Hades obliges. The blond-haired love of Megara's life is spared a death he may have deserved, and what does he do in return? He screws Megara over, which isn't entirely too surprising when one considers his tendency to perform acts of douchery, and leaves her for another woman. Megara, heartbroken, swears men off for the rest of her life. We're not sure where she stands on women, but given that this is ancient Greece we're talking about, she could swing seven ways. We could make it easy and say she just swears off falling in love.

Not too long after her disastrous end with Adonis, Hades sends Megara on a task to retrieve an amphora. In order to get it, she easily coerces a young Hercules into aiding her simply by swaying her hips and adding a little sweet talk to the mix, proving that even at a young age, Megara was well-versed in the art of Hobags. ...Unfortunately, the entire ordeal ends in tragedy, and Megara and Hercules wind up forgetting they even met each other.

Life goes on. Years pass. Megara plays maid to Hades, who is preparing himself for a hostile takeover of Mt. Olympus, and is eventually ordered to persuade the River Guardian, Nessus, to join his army. Hercules intervenes when he finds Nessus putting the moves on Megara, who is understandably grossed out by getting hit on by a giant horse-man. When Lord of the Flame discovers Hercules is very much the opposite of the level of dead Pain and Panic were ordered to make him, he flips his rocker and sends Meg on a mission to help end the demi-god's life. This involves her astounding acting skills, Pain, Panic, and a multi-headed Hydra.

It doesn't end well for Hades, but no one cares about him in this application, so we're moving on!

He attempts to persuade Megara to woo Hercules with her sexuality so she can learn his weakness, but the poor girl's grown pretty fond of him and refuses (quite explosively, with yelling and hand gestures and the whole deal.) She bends to Hades' will, however, when he offers her the ultimate box top prize: Her freedom. She scurries off to save Wonderboy Herc from a sea of raging hormones.

Personality that I totally ripped from an old app of mine: Megara is a bitter woman. She's sworn off love-- But it's not so easy to blame her. After all, the love of her life left her for another woman after she sold her soul to save him. It is her past that drives her to distrust men. Megara doesn't want to risk her heart breaking again, and she doesn't want to risk making another life-altering mistake.

She's convinced that everyone, not just men, are dishonest and petty, stemming back to herself. For a living, she lies, acts, and toys with people-- anything to accomplish the task she's given. She is sarcastic and, at times, can be quite mean. Because of her own negative traits (and the negative light in which she views herself,) it's easier for her to see the negative traits in everyone else. It's easier for her to believe that everyone is, by nature, a bad person, and it's possible that it's so easy to believe that because of her fear of getting hurt again. She won't get close to people like her, and if she isn't close to anyone, she can't be disappointed.

Megara longs most for her freedom and a life away from Hades and his minions. It is this dream that causes her to bend to Hades' will even when she disagrees with that he's doing. She will put up a fight and she will refuse to do something, but unless he offers her freedom to get her to comply, she only buckles unwillingly under his fiery reminders that he (quite literally) owns her.

Despite such negative traits, Megara isn't a bad person. She does what she does because she has to, and she believes in what she does in order to protect herself. She's vulnerable and emotional, and she does care for people, as is evident by her wishing for Hercules to get away from trouble before it got any worse. She doesn't enjoy seeing people hurt, and she doesn't particularly enjoy taking advantage of people. She hates doing it.

She does get attached, though she is reluctant to admit it. After all, she is human, and what are humans if not puppets to the whims of emotions?

Other:
*Fanon - Canonically, taking both the movie and the television series in to account, Hercules and Adonis are the only love interests not only named, but depicted as playing a large role in Megara's life. Because of this, Fanon has pretty much established Adonis as being the man that broke Meg's heart, rather than some unnamed bloke the movie seems to depict.

AN INTERESTING NOTE is that according to mythological history, Megara is a princess, having been born the daughter of Creon, the King of Thebes. However, Disney saw fit not to mention this AT ALL and instead gave princess status to Mulan, who ... isn't a princess. Poor Meg just KEEPS GETTING SCREWED.

Theme Song. Relevant to her personality and history! YOU CAN EVEN SING ALONG. There are lyrics. WOO.
Deleted Theme Song. Relevant for the same reasons above. This song has more insight into her personality and how she views herself, however.

First Person (entry type):
[Voice.]

Well, lookie here. What is this, Wonderboy's schedule for the week?

[The unrolling of paper can be heard. It is a scroll, and a particularly interesting one, at that.]

...I think he might have overdone it on the Heroic Golden Glow. Augh-- My eyes.

[Discarding it seems an incredibly good idea, but the glow fades, and curiosity is a little too difficult to ignore. As the messages come in to focus, Megara makes a peculiar, almost surprised sound.]

Ouch. Talk about airing your dirty laundry. I don't think I've seen such a pathetic outcry for help since I left Town Square. ...This might be worse, now that I think on it. Not sure which one of the Lightbulbs managed to lose this, but I doubt they'll miss it.

Third Person:
Well, this was great. Not only had Megara managed to sidetrack herself, she managed to fail quite a decent amount at caring. Thebes had been an absolute wreck, and she was hardly going to start on the Lord of Flames, himself. Her own nerves were high, as it was. Not to mention, a lunch break never really hurt anyone.

Under normal circumstances.

...Normal circumstances she wasn't entirely involved with. At all. You know, not like she could help it, considering her apparent unending service to Big Blue, himself.

Megara sighed at the thought, rolling her eyes as she swallowed a mouthful of baklava, and crossed her legs. She had already planned the evening in accordance with Hades' desires, though she found herself less than fond of the activities. Oh, sure, a play by any other name would be worth the viewing, but Oedipus? She'd have to be forgiven for her lack of interest in the questionable activities of her distant and deranged relative. In fact, she liked to pretend that entire side of the family didn't exist.

But hey, who was she to complain, right? After all, it could be worse. Nessus came to mind.

Ew. She shuddered at the thought and suddenly the syrupy desert she seemed bent on devouring just seconds earlier was completely unappealing. "Back to work, I guess," she managed with a huff, regarding the baklava with one last look of contempt before forcing it down her throat.
