Diplomacy?

There has been interest in playing some Diplomacy this weekend. I'm available Friday or Saturday, and I assume Saturday will work better for most people. I mentioned it in comments to my previous post, since my friend Scott (squid314) will actually be in town, and is a big fan of it.

So far, we have Mike and myself, and Eric (Maniakes) interested. Assuming ( Read more... )

I'd prefer Friday evening, if that works with others' schedules.

Friday evening, for a game that can take upwards of 7 hours? How early could you potentially start?

I can leave work a little after 5, which'd get me to your place around 6.

Ok, if Scott's up for it and we can get enough people, we'll plan to start at our place around 6. With food. :D

What is Diplomacy? Is it like LARP?

Kinda-sorta-not-really. It's a board game, where each of the 7 players represents one of the pre-WWI European Great Powers (Britain, France, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Italy, and the Ottoman Empire). The goal is to conquer half the "supply centers" (important provinces) on the map.

The nifty feature of the game is that all moves are resolved simultaneously, and order resolution is strictly deterministic (no dice, superior force always wins, ties go to the defender). Players have 10-20 minutes per turn to negotiate with other players over what they claim they're going to do that turn, then submit written orders which are processed all at once.

Games are mainly won and lost in the negotiation phase, partially by your ability to make deals, but more so by your ability to bullshit convincingly and to pick the right moment to stab your allies in the back. The negotiation phase tends to run rather LARP-like.

It also takes many hours to play and is extremely strategic. We played a short-ish game at the Shirecon we hosted at the church, but I don't remember if you or Richard participated in the game. I know we had Mike, me, Scott, Bill, and Eoin playing, and I can't remember if Greg was there too.
