A friend of mine bought Starcraft II about a year ago (at the full $60 price, I might add) and we were both shocked to find out that in order to play the game, you have to be connected to the Internet and logged into Battlenet. I find that to be more hassle than the game is worth. One of the reasons why I buy computer games is so that I have something to play when I'm not browsing the Internet or when my 'Net connection is down. Having lived in a house where the wireless connection would cut out on me once or twice a week, I know that a constant Internet connection is never guaranteed. So to require it for a game just to play single player mode is, to me, a poor design decision. Blizzard's just lucky that they have such diehard Starcraft fans who have been waiting so friggin' long to play this game that they'll tolerate its unnecessary restraints.
Yea well, I have refused to buy the Ubisoft games that have 'must always be online' requirements for the SINGLE PLAYER MODE. I do like the Splinter Cell series, but having my game be at the mercy of a network drop... Just, no.
Mafia 2 is a SINGLE PLAYER ONLY game. For the PC version they force you to download Steam. You have to be logged in to Steam and online to (1) install the game (2) and play the game. I bought the retail box when the game hit PC. I tried to install the game immediately, but kept getting error codes when trying to boot up and play. It first wants to check for updates before it will load every time... The main menu screen comes up and then It throws up an error code! I contacted Steam and they told me that I had to download the game from their website ($$ for retail price $$) ??? I own the disc, why should I then buy the digital version just to play my game??? And of course when you buy a PC game now, you can't return it...
Ouch! So from what you said near the beginning, were you able to go online and reinstall, using your disk, or, as far as you know, do you still have the awful requirement of buying it again?
I didn't know when I'd ever get a connection faster than dial-up, and I read that one of my favorite game franchises was going to require Steam for their next version. My family helped me out, and I've since found Steam helpful for playing my favorite old game, but I will be very cautious about buying anything from the local GameStop. I'll have lots of questions.
I hope things work out well for you. I know I'd feel awful if I couldn't play a game I bought.

It sounds like they were concerned about store employees buying up advance copies and getting to the game before everyone else rather than explicitly criminal behavior. Still...

Nearly all stores have a policy that forces employees to wait for customers to receive their product before the employee can buy a product. (former retail experience)
The kittens are doing wonderfully! We have renamed Mason and Maui to Dash and Joy. Dash because he's always running and playing, and Joy because she is so happy and loving.
