Trying to find the charity with the fewest accusations of corruption and pocket-lining to donate to. I think I'm going with Doctors Without Borders. From what I understand, they're already situated in Haiti and I've yet to hear anything bad about them. But then the credit card companies are skimming a percentage of donations made by card, so ugh to ( Read more... )

I bit back my reservations and donated to the Red Cross because they mobilize fast. It may have been a bad idea.

I've been meaning to ask you if you are interested in applying for SSI. My sister's job is helping people apply. She can give you some good advice if you want to apply yourself, apply with them or to just give you information about whether it's right for you.

Let me know and I can private message her cell phone number to you.

I don't want to come across like I'm judging anyone for who they donated to. I just know I only have a very small amount to donate (like, donut and coffee money) so I really want it to count. The images I've been seeing in the news and on TV have just been killing me.

Actually, I do already have SSI due to a seemingly unrelated disorder, seasonal affective disorder that didn't react to any antidepressants leading to me inevitably getting fired every September-January.

(This was actually a result of the congenital Vitamin D deficiency most people with EDS have, but that's an entry/rant for another day.)

Nevertheless, I really appreciate it, because relatively soon (2 years?) I'll have to re-apply and explaining that the past disorder was really part of this other disorder (but please don't cut my benefits) should be fun.

After a while, I had to take a Haiti-break...from the news and everything. I was overloading. And I think the whole text thing is actually a really good idea. It seems to have raised quite a bit of money because people are more willing to donate this way. The convenience factor, I think. I only have a little bit of cash, so I'm just going to go the super old-fashioned route. Let me use these stamps before the USPS goes up on postage. Again.

Thank you for Facebook voting for my charity!

Also, I wanted to mention the extremely interesting 'Americanization of Mental Health' article. It reminded me a little of The Queen of Wonderland (hard to read mustard and ketchup design but worth it) which suggests that the model of mental health in America is incorrect even for Americans ( ... )

I'm just like, 'where do they come from and why don't they stay there?' Why would you even say such a thing? What good comes of it? I feel embarrassed as a Christian, as an American and pretty much as a human too.

Thanks for your Facebook votes!
