2011: An awesome year
2004;
2007;
2008;
2009;
2010 1. What did you do in 2011 that you'd never done before?
Made friends in the music industry. Joined a magazine. Become an editor. Tried new cocktails. Attended a client party.
2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I think last year's were to keep the Beijing Gig Guide alive, which is DONE! But the gym thing is not. I'm working on both for next year. Writing… creatively? Isn't happening, but I want it to.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Yes, my uncle passed away a couple of weeks ago.
5. What countries did you visit?
Australia and Japan!
6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?
Some semblance of a love life, haha.
7. What dates from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
As I said last year, I'm terrible with dates. But I loved Chinese New Year this year, hanging out with
waxrose and the Canadian crew, and then going to Osaka, that was a truly great trip. July 4 was a fun day, and night lol
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Becoming an editor at a magazine.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Admittedly, I tend not to try things that I'll fail at, but I haven't failed at anything this year that I can recall.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nothing major that I can recall. I mean, everyone gets a cold now and then. Oh, I fell up the stairs at the subway one day and could barely walk all that day, and then couldn't bike for like a week lol. But I'm not sure even that counts...
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Well, the best gift I got was my Kindle, but the best thing I bought was my iPad. I haven't been too materialistic this year, I just spend my money on consumables and travel.
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
The people of Japan, who were incredible when faced with such a huge natural disaster, and the workers at the Fukushima nuclear plant who risked their lives and well-being to stop something even worse happening.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Gadaffi, but he got what was coming to him.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Again, travel, concerts and drinking. It's kind of all I spend my money on.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
I was really, really excited to see SMAP in Beijing. It was kind of amazing.
16. What songs will always remind you of 2011?
Any Residence A song, since I discovered how amazing they are in August.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i) ...happier or sadder?
Happier, I'd say. I was having an awkward time in the middle of the year, but the change of job has turned everything around.
ii) thinner or fatter?
I don't think I'm much fatter than I was this time last year, but I'm sure I am. I need to work on it.
iii) richer or poorer?
I had 7500RMB in my bank account this time last year. Now I have 7200RMB haha, that sucks. And I need to take more money out of the bank today. I'm burning through it like nobody's business. But I do get paid in the next couple of weeks and that should be a big lot of money.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Working out.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Drinking and eating. Only a little less, though.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I spent this Christmas with a few friends watching movies and eating Garth's amazing curries. I dressed up in Christmas colors and put up the Christmas lights out in the living room. It was wonderful.
22. Did you fall in love in 2011?
Nope!
23. How many one night stands?
Two in very quick succession and then I decided I wasn't going to do it again. I'm very proud, because I haven't, even though there have been opportunities.
24. What were your favourite TV programs?
Apart from old standards, my favorite shows were Modern Family, Downton Abbey, Louie, Shameless, White Collar… and probably some other stuff.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Not that I can think of. I don't really hate people.
26. What was the best book you read?
I still don't read much at all, even with my Kindle. I can just list what I read: Descent by Jeff Long, The Time Traveler's Wife… I'm not actually sure I've read anything else :/
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Residence A, by a long shot.
28. What did you want and get?
A Kindle! A new job!
29. What did you want and not get?
A boyfriend :/ lol that has been an answer way too many times.
30. What was your favourite film of this year?
I don't even know if I have seen that many movies this year… I've only seen three in theatres, so let's say Gantz, just because.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 27 this year and went home for my birthday. On my actual birthday I had dinner with my family at home, and it was lovely.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
I cannot think of anything.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?
Consistently, jeans and a tshirt.
34. What kept you sane?
Same as last year: "Family, friends, Arashi. Possibly not in that order."
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I feel like it was an Aiba year this year.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Nothing stirred me much, but the Occupy Wall Street thing has been interesting to follow, if only on the Daily Show.
37. Who did you miss?
I missed Hannah! Having her live here for a year was awesome, and when she left in January it was definitely hard. We haven't spoken nearly enough since she's gone, but I hope we can be better about that in 2012.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
I have made so many awesome new friends this year, but I would have to say Ami. She's young and sometimes super snobby but she's also wonderful.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011:
Being yourself, and dedicating your time to something you love, without expecting anything to come from it, will inevitably get you where you want to be. If I hadn't stuck with the Beijing Gig Guide, I know I would never have half the friends I have now, not to mention my amazing job. And there was no reason for the BGG other than my personal love of music.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
巡り 巡る 季節の 途中で 何色の / In the midst of the changing seasons
明日を 描きますか / What color will we paint tomorrow?
強く 強く 信じ 合えた なら / If we can strongly, strongly believe in each other
何色の 未来が 待っていますか / What color future will be waiting?
(Arashi, "Ashita no Kioku")
And for a third year, this song still speaks to me at the end of the year.
41. What was your favorite moment of the year?
My favorite moment? Aiya, I have no idea. Japan trip, having my parents back here, my crazy summer, getting a bunny, getting a new job, and some awesome things that have just happened in the last week… I just… everything has been amazing this year.
42. What was your least favourite moment of the year?
Crying on the street in front of the pet shop because I was stressed out about my old job, my new job, and my rabbit being potentially sick. That was a perfect storm of shit that resulted in one of my least favorite moments ever.
43. Where were you when 2011 began?
Dos Kolegas.
44. Who were you with?
My sister!!
45. Where will you be when 2011 ends?
I was at Mao Mao Chong.
46. Who will you be with when 2011 ends?
I was with Garth, Rico, and Jo. It all went pretty much according to plan.
47. What was your favourite month of 2011?
December has been fantastic, but there have been stand-out moments all year.
48. Did you drink a lot of alcohol in 2011?
You know what? I've decided that I've probably had more alcohol this year than I did in 2005. Finally, yes, I can officially say I drank a LOT in 2011.
49. Did you do a lot of drugs in 2011?
Still no~
50. How many people did you sleep with in 2011?
Just the two.
51. Did you do anything you are ashamed of this year?
"Ashamed of? Not really... I mean, I did some stupid stuff, and some things I'm not proud of or kinda wish I could take back, but I'm not really ashamed of them." <--- Answer from 2008 is still good.
52. What was the worst lie someone told you in 2011?
Again, if someone told me a lie I haven't found out about it yet.
53. Did you treat somebody badly in 2011?
I have been insensitive, but I've tried not to treat anyone badly.
54. Did somebody treat you badly in 2011?
Pride had me bummed a few times this year, but he was the one I was insensitive to, so… we had an awkward period, that's all.
56. How much money did you spend in 2011?
I don't want to calculate how much money I have earned and spent. Suffice to say, it goes out almost as quickly as it comes in.
57. If you could go back in time to any moment of 2011 and change what?
I probably would not have had that second one night stand. There was no reason for it, I was just bored. And though nothing weird and awkward happened because of it, it's something that didn't need to happen, lol
58. What are your plans for 2012?
I'd like to read more, to write more for fun, and get some sort of exercising in outside of my biking. And maybe to eat a little less. ;)
