Leave a Light on
It always started the same way. You would argue, fight and then both storm off. Usually it was you being pissed off at her for treating you like a child; or it was her angry at you for once again getting yourself into trouble.
One of you, whoever gave in first, would find themselves at the other’s door. Words were hardly spoken. Somewhere along the line you had come to the agreement that they just weren’t necessary. You couldn’t find the right ones anyway.
Today, it wasn’t any different. Shortly after midnight, sleep deprived and still angry, you opened the door for her. Only a moment after, you found yourself pressed against the wall, hands furiously pulling at your clothes. It all happened very unceremoniously.
Her head was resting on your shoulder. The formerly moan-filled room was filled with silence yet again. You refused to take the first step. She had come to you; it was her turn.
“Bed,” you finally whispered, unable to keep standing much longer.
With just a nod, she let you pull her along with you. The routine was oddly comfortable; a reassuring rhythm of things to come.
“I’m sorry,” she mumbled much later.
“Me, too.”
