I'm not exactly sure how it works, but once you've been on lj for at least a week (I think), and your journal has been active, you generate an invitation code. This can be viewed in the Invite a Friend menu on the left. You can have one friend join and create an lj for free and then that friend will generate an invitation code after keeping their journal for one week, etc. Just in case you're interested in having your friends join for free - that's how I got a journal; a friend of mine sent me his invitation code.
If you're interested, I can get the exact directions on how to do it from him. (Although I'm pretty sure I gave you the right info on how to do it)

Well hello there! I just noticed that you had added me as a friend here, so I decided to come on over and find out a little about this new person... so.. here I am.. here... finding out about you.. Hehe =) Hope you don't mind! Anyway, just curious as to how you found me out here in Livejournal Land (try that for an alternative to Candy Land... instead of using little gingerbread children for pieces, you'd use angst-ridden teenagers, and rather than landing on peanut brittle houses, you'd wind up at Psychadelic raves...) and wondering if, somehow I know you from somewhere... at the very least, I feel flattered that someone thinks I'm interesting enough to read about =) Talk to you again sometime, I'm sure
