"...And the exceptions tend not to actually like or be especially good at sex, so that's a bullet dodged, really..."
Yes.
Women, I have found, are vulnerable to acting crazy and vain when they come face to face with lack of knowledge about their own bodies and the dreams of adolescent boys (and many men who appear to be grown are in actuality boys.) and that applies to breasts as well.
Breasts: Society tells men that bigger is better, heck the nipples don't even have to work as long as they are large, this is counter to what good sex actually requires, the sexual ideal has become the pre-pubescent body (no hips or ass) with unrealistic show-breasts attached. Women only fall prey to this folly when they are unfamliar with their own bodies, with their own sexuality.
The same goes for this particular brand of insanity.
At the risk of horn tooting.... I've been of this opinion for a long time. I don't know how many women (more than I've had the pleasures of sex with) have expressed worry/revulsion at the idea of how they look, "down there".
And it wasn't always women who were unsure of what they wanted.
People, by and large, are attractive (I'm not even going to get into how clothing makes people seem misshapen and alien, if large, and causees anxieties about not bing good looking if thing).
It's the same reason why going to a nudist resort is good for appreciating how one looks. Variation is huge, most of it isn't that different, and most people look just fine.
OH crap!, I haven't unscreened you! Sorry about that.
But on to your comment
Women do need to become more familiar with their own bodies, need to appreciate the variety that so intrigues our lovers. We are neither dolls nor robots a fact that grown folk appreciate, only young boys (and that can be mentally as well as physically) want women who look like clones of the artifice found in Playboy.
There are many myths surrounding the female genitalia omen do themselves no favours by not having the knowledge to debunk them.

Get familiar, knowledge of self is indeed power.

I've never seen a vulva I thought was ugly.
