So you cannot keep Edith even as an npc, that is a shame I liked her.

I don't have to kill her off; Edith remains my personal character. I just can't play any personal characters while ST. But I can keep her "in the stable" and I can continue to spend XP on her, and then in six months, or two years, or whenever I quit ST and join the playership again I can bring her back out.
