for the record

servers make less than minimum wage

yeah, i know that sounds crazy impossible, even.
but its true!!.
we make half of that.

so, as consumers, that means this:
tips are not optional.

they aren't "instant karma", and they aren't a reward for when i do everything perfectly.
they're a server's livelihood

they should be at least 20% of ( Read more... )

by the way.

i honestly don't think that i owe a server a single thing before walking in and being seated whatsoever. the purpose of the tip (in my eyes, anyways), and the reason it's not factored in with the paycheck and tips simply aren't done away with, is because it's an incentive to do your job. if a server does a terrible job and treats me horribly, it's natural that i won't want to tip them 20% of my meal in monetary form, because they haven't earned it at all. what servers do is a service to the patrons of the store, and therefore the customers are expected to be treated kindly and with respect. whether or not the customers deserve to be treated this way is sort of irrelevant, sadly.

i doubt there is anyone here who has more sympathy for people who work in restaurants than me.. considering i've been working in one since i was in 8th grade AND especially considering that practically my whole family is in the resturant business.

I'm a server and I like to think a damn good one. I've been in the restaurant business for well over 3 years now, and average 20% tips usually. But, let me tell you, do not by any means expect a 20% tip from anyone. 15% is still more or less the accepted amount in most people's minds, and some people it's even less. You only get 20% if you're a damn good server and you do a damn good job, either that or they have worked in the service industry before and know what it can be like. Example: Yesterday, I had 8 tables at once. I gave 5 of them good service, I know this for a fact. All of them tipped me 15-18%. I didn't give them great and amazing service, I was far too busy for that. I gave 2 of those 8 tables decent service. Not bad, but nothing to write home about. I made $5 on a $30 check, and $5 on a $37 check off those two. I had one table that was just ridiculously needy, to the point where me being able to meet their wants was a ludicrous task, with 1 or 8 tables. I gave them decent service as well, as decent as I could, but it ( ... )
