Whazzup?

I've seen What's Up episodes 1-6 subbed and 7 raw, and I EFFING LOVE IT. I'm going to go on a ramble about a few of the characters and why I love them.
First off, that paparazzi with the annoying fake laugh needs to die. Now that that's out of the way, the characters I want to discuss are Chae Young, Byung Gun, and Doori.

Chae Young is a great character wobbling between antagonism and woobie. She's obviously set up to be a bad guy with her manipulative ways and her clear disdain for other students, but she gets these moments where we see just how vulnerable she really is. She has her bitchy face on with everyone except Soo Bin, who she already knows, and she confesses her fear of people forgetting who she is. She may be cruel to others in her ambitions, but no one can deny that she works hard. The scene in episode 3(?) where she danced alone in the studio was pretty sad, and her speech to Jae Hun in episode 6 was also a tearjerker. I fully believe that yes, she uses horrible and underhanded methods to get herself in the spotlight, but once she makes supportive friends like the others her self-esteem will be repaired and she can work on her dreams in a healthier manner. I'm really hoping for a friendship between her and Do Sung, because I feel like they can relate to one another.
Byung Gun is without hesitation my favorite character. He's sweet and awkward and desperately wants to prove himself but has a paralyzing anxiety issue. Ngl, I relate to him a lot because I used to do plays and musicals but my anxiety grew and I suffer a lot because of it. It's especially hard for him because of his overbearing, wealthy family (please let them come up again as an issue, please) doesn't know and wouldn't approve of his chosen major. Byung Gun is one of the total underdogs and he knows it. That's why I literally shrieked with joy when he approached the vocal professor in episode 7 about his stage fright. Byung Gun has a lot of potential and I'm really excited to see where it takes him.
Doori is a sad, sad character who's lived too much for others and is finally rebelling against her mother. Her voyeuristic spying on other characters is a little creepy, but I think it's her way of exploring herself and seeing just how other people use their independence. I was not surprised that she got a crush on the alcoholic teacher; he's the first adult she's known who's given her agency over her life. He tells her no, it's not her fault, and he lets her cry it out. I highly doubt he's going to return her affections but at least it'll be entertaining!

If I have one fault with this drama, it's that I want more Soo Bin! Give me Soo Bin-Byung Gun roommate hijinks! Is that too much to ask?

(well okay, there are more faults than that. I love Do Sung but I find his storyline really boring compared to the other ones. And I want more little moments with Jae Hun and Tae Yi like when they sang and danced together. And I want someone to give Chae Young a hug and tell her she has worth outside of the show business. And I want someone to punch that paparazzi guy in the face.)

kdrama, rambling, what's up
