Hm, perhaps Severus just took the cup as a momentum, a symbol of what they were. And in doing so he's showing that he's ready to move on?

Or maybe it's not too late? I liked the ambiguity of the ending--it seems like Severus does care about him, after all, but is he willing to give Remus a second chance? I'm a sucker for happy endings, but in this case, I like that it was left open-ended for the reader to imagine. (Though I certainly wouldn't object to a sequel if you ever decided to write one!)
