RANT: The Snupin Dilemma (Part IV)

Jul 17, 2012 14:18

I don't know why I still can't get over it. There are some stories that elude the fact that Remus was in fact, a bully. His actions in Prison of Askaban fortify this belief. Urgh, I hate him. I hate how Severus is hated whilst he is beloved. I hate how authors excuse him and let him easily go. I still haven't found a story that does justice to the ( Read more... )

Hee!

It's true, very often writers don't acknowledge Remus' role within the Marauders. Unfortunately (for me, I mean :D) I haven't written much Snupin, but I think that, because of the Remus I write, it can't be really considered Snupin-somehow I got the impression over the years that the Remus popular with Snupin readers is very different from my Remus, who hides a lot of flaws underneath his pleasant demeanour.

I have to admit that I too, don't 'punish' him-not that he doesn't deserve it, but I always felt that the people I knew in RL who were like Remus, always got away.

I like to read the cardigan wearing, warm hearted, slightly clumsy and gentle Remus, but I have never managed to write him like this-and have always felt guilty about it, which is maybe one reason why I don't write many Snupins.

I look very much forward to your Snupin-I agree a lot in regards how you see him!

It's alright :) People have what they're comfortable writing and what they're not. I'm not comfortable - or rather am not satisfied - with writing a happy Remus.

I understand what you're trying to say, about the Remus in mainstream vs. your Remus (I agree, btw). This is why it's frustrating. There are a few diamonds among the rough, but even then, sometimes, I just have to ignore some of my own personal feelings and beliefs in order to completely enjoy it.

Whoohoo, finally someone who sees! I'll try not the disappoint :)

I just love Severus Snape so much. It's frightening.

I usually write Remus as feeling guilty about his actions, or lack thereof, as they pertain to Severus when they were in school together and even later on. That said I agree, even when I do that I generally don't punish him. I tend to not punish either of them for canon events, though I do tend to make those issues come up to a greater or lesser extent. For example my version of Severus doesn't trust Remus at the beginning almost with out fail and even later on once they have developed some kind of friendship he isn't sure of him due to memories of Remus' passed poor choices, either directly or indirectly. Likewise my Remus is very tentative with Severus because he knows Severus has no reason to like or trust him. I do agree though, people seem to close ranks around Remus and make excuses for him more than they do so for Severus.

Canon is a bit of a muddle for me. However, despite my love for Snape, there were a few stories that made me sympathize with Remus because of Snape's cruelty - I'm not sure if you've read The Choices We Make by Snape's Nighty? (It's an Mpreg, so if that's not your kind of thing, be warned.) I enjoyed this story very much because Snape sort of has the upper hand in here; where he's the one being courted and having two wizards vie for his attention and compete for him. And that's what I want for Snape - for him to have the upper hand in life and people.

--- And sorry for getting slightly off topic, but that's what I wish for Snupin. The current stream is good, but there's something, shall I say, missing?

I haven't read much of your work, since I don't really read WIPs, until well, WID, but I like your drabbles. I like that Snape is still weary of Lupin despite them being in a relationship - whatever that may entail - though. It feels closer to character, and quite frankly, closer to what most people would do. Or maybe what I would do.

I think I've read both actually, and I agree, they are the exception, not the rule. I totally get the distaste for WIPs, I've come across way too many awesome things that were abandoned. :( That said most of my stuff isn't a WIP, I've only ever done two counting the one I'm currently doing. I maintain my drabbles are some of my best work, no dialog to wrestle with and I can imply to my heart's content! :D Agreed, I'm a bit stand-offish in real life so I just channel that into my Severus as it seems character appropriate.

I love drabbles. I remember when I first got into HP fanfiction, I could not stop reading them. I feel like I really can't complain about the current Snupin, because I myself find it difficult to start and continue writing them. So, as much as I would like to read something different, it is still difficult for me to write.
