Yeah, don't look at the needle. If you ignore it and focus on something else (and hold still), you'll be amazed how much it doesn't hurt and isn't actually too uncomfortable.
Having big veins is really lucky. Take it from someone whose veins are almost invisible - having big veins helps. Tons.
I am of the "scared stiff of needles" group...and really object to the whole needle in the arm feeling. I had to deal with it when I had appendicitis and had to have an IV in my arm, and that was a SMALL needle. When they take blood, I can't stand the sucking feeling of blood coming out of my arm. It unnerves me way too much. Maybe in a few years I'll mature enough to do that, but I salute you for doing that now. Take care, and enjoy your findings when they come!!!
Oddly... The blood bit didn't bug me a bit. I didn't feel it leaving and didn't care that there was a bag of my own blood sitting there. It was just feeling the needle in my vain which was unpleasant.
I've been exsanguinated twice over (over the course of almost 4 years). I never watch them put in the needle, and the feeling of the needle in my arm is the worst part of it. The pain is minimal, sitting there for 15 minutes is no big deal, but...
There's a sliver of steel in my arm. Yeah.
It doesn't help that I've got one (1) good vein for drawing blood, and that has to be used for every donation *and* any bloodwork for medical reasons. I'm starting to get worried about scar tissue buildup.
