I never had really good pizza in LA, either. Turns out all the awesome pizza chefs moved to Monterey. We found STELLAR pizza at our local mall - incredible thin-crust stuff worthy of NY, but with the addition of very California elements like artichoke hearts.
It may the water up by you. I don't see how a town with some of the richest people (not to mention needy insatiable people) would not demand good pizza of the economy. And it's a simple thing to make. The cheese can be imported, the sauce even. However, you have to make the dough (which is just flour, egg, water). I've come to the conclusion that it's the water.
