I had a facial today early this morning. My appointment was with a woman from Throgs Neck named Virginia. Her facial skillz were freaking awesome, warranting a "Z" rather than an "S." The conversation was pleasant for the most part too. We talked about LA, Westchester, taxes in Chester, Bronx, and CT, my book, and how she got into being an ( Read more... )

Ugh. Yet one more example of how feminism is kind of doing a backslide in this country.

The reason we pay taxes for public schools even when we have no children enrolled in the public schools is that when schools fail, their communities suffer. We pay so that everyone can get an education, which cuts down on crime and despair. It keeps communities healthy--or healthier than they would be otherwise. I agree with you that education is always a solid investment--in everyone, no matter how poor or unrelated to us.

I agree with you about why we pay taxes for school. I wish it were that pure in practice though ( ... )

Yeah, that's fair. I wouldn't live in a place that passed particularly high millages for itself, either. It can get really excessive. I was thinking of states like Arizona and Delaware that have incredibly shitty school systems because residents have chosen to put almost no taxes towards their public schools.

I agree with you on that. Arizona and Delaware should put adequate funds toward schools. I wish -- a very far-reaching wish -- that Westchester would change the property tax system so that everyone pays for everyone's schools in a way. For example, the some of the taxes in Bronxville go to Bville and some go to other schools like Mount Vernon. Bronxville spends 35K per child per year. (At least that's what the number was when I was doing my second grad degree at Fordham education. We had a lot of principals of Westchester schools as professors so there was always this kind of talk.) Why not spend 30K and spend a little more to educate the kids in Mount Vernon, or any less successful school district. And how much of that money is just wasted? Or lining the pockets of some superintendent? But it's just a wish. It would never happen. School performance is so highly attached to property value by now ( ... )
