Playing On Our Fears Or Good Motivation?

Personally I think there are two things going on here. One, it's very well done. If it was a little more campy from the get-go, there might not have been a problem. It's actually scary off the top.

Two, she gets away. With America, the woman cannot be victorious in a mainstream violent film. Indie films, sure, but not something big like Nike. I remember in True Romance when Patricia Arquette successfully wins the fight with the hit man that's come to kill her, she shoots him until the shotgun is empty and then turns the gun around and uses it as a club to hit him until she can't move her arms anymore. I think that is a very natural and realistic reaction. Make sure the bad guy is dead. But it got cut out in the re-release. None of the violence done to her was cut out. I think this might be part of that same equation. The woman successfully runs away and doesn't get her typical horror film death ( ... )

I liked that ad. I think it's far more empowering (to use an overused word) than off-putting, and I think anyone with any knowledge at all of popular culture will get the reference. Plus it's a scene I'd dearly love to see in a movie.
