Faith, Power and Fantasy, a comprehensive history of the United States involvement of the Middle East since the middle 1700s.
For example, the Navy was actually created to fight a war in the middle east, the first American serviceman to die abroad was to die in the middle East, and during the constitutional convention, there were over a hundred American hostages over in the middle east. Not to mention the first war America fought was in the Middle East - all of this against the pirate-states of Morocco/Algeria/Tuisia.
