How to win friends and influence people.

Clearly, I don't got the knack. Ho hum, such is life. I may not be nice, but I'd like to think I'm "good" for a given value, (mine own) of what good is. Just had to pop a comment on Kyle Cassidy's lj. He made it sound totally woo woo that women in their 40's no less were talented athletes. *Like them darkies who are, you know, so westernised, they ( Read more... )

Don't worry, I don't have that knack either. I was once described as Anya without the capitalism.

I find that sticking up for your feelings is better than letting sly comments pass. But it works both ways more than people imagine but it's not as picked up on. Rich hates Xmas tv as all the adverts come out that show men being described as idiots incapable of doing the most basic task and equally the boots adverts are awful for both sexes.

I really don't like adverts that play up the stereotypes of either gender. It winds peeps up and perpetuates the, "them and us", culture, dividing, rather than uniting. There is still a massive disparity, women are still treated far, far worse than blokes in most aspects of daily life, but all BS should be tackled.

I'm with you there. I went to a meeting at Typhoo last week at which they showed their new TV ads featuring 'nu-man' Ben Fogle. Both ads show kids running rings round him before he utters, 'how does she do it?' and settles down to a cup of tea. I found it incredibly patronising to both genders.

Try being a stay-at-home dad. You do get positive reactions but also a lot of negative ones from the mum-posse which run the whole gamut from "clearly not *really* a man" to "only here to try and pick up single mums" to "paedo !".

Luckily His Nibs is now of an age where I have less contact with playgroup-type environments but toddler swimming sessions at the pool still make me horribly uncomfortable because of the looks I sometimes get.

If we all start at 'we're human' and not try guessing what effects our genitals have on our desire to buy shoes or fawn over vomit-inducingly rich thugs who kick balls then that is for the best. I hate all the men/mars women/venus bullshit which actually seems to be getting worse as some other stuff improves slightly.

In other news, Karen did you see the skeleton butler ?
