darwin’s theory of evolution clearly states the major contribution of the survival of the fittest to the success in the advancement of all living organisms. In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck, the author, demonstrates through the character, Lenny, the effects of not being mentally fit for the survival of one’s own life situations. Although extremely physically fit Lenny lacks the sufficient mental fitness to survive and furthermore, contribute to the advancement of the evolution of mankind. Those who are fit to survive are able pass their beneficial traits to the next generation and those who are not fit to survive through their given life situations should eventually die out and stop reproducing. If applying darwins theory to this particular story one could say Lenny’s mental insufficiency is the inevitable cause of his own death because it prevents, for an individual, the development of three mandatory tools for the survival: a total understanding of one’s self, the ability to be independent, and the ability to apply

Lenny’s inability to be independent is another major characteristic leading to his death. The relationship between Lenny and George is quite comparable to that of one between a parasite and its host. Lenny’s stunted mind works much like that of a parasite- simply obeying its instincts and never comprehending that it’s actions are harmful to others. George eventually sees this and seems, in turn, to realize that with a host and parasitic relationship one must eventually die. Either the parasite will defeat its host and continuously spread its wrath to other hosts or the host identifies the parasite and rids himself of it once and for all with the knowledge that he has prevented other vulnerable prey from experiencing its draining wrath. What makes this particular relationship different from any other natural parasitic relationships is that the host cares a great deal for the parasite. George knows lenny is sucking every opportunity out of his life and he knows what should be done to replenish those opportunities for himself. He
