I love my job. Ethical considerations are genuinely part of my day to day working environment. It makes me question how I step in the world and what living in a good and honourable way looks like. It engages me philosophically on real world topics, which I actually have a hand in. Debates where debates might turn to action. Two ratified treaties - ( Read more... )

I hate it too. Because in a way it's totally justified to be wary of strange people who may harm you.... but in another way it's a judgemental insult of the highest calibre for the person you're being paranoid about. Séamus has mentioned that he's been out walking sometimes and girls will cross the street to avoid walking near him, JUST because he's a guy, walking alone. He says it feels sucky to be on that end of things. :(

It's a tricky situation to avoid.

I remember walking up behind this woman with La once near crack towers and she lept out of her skin, apparently she'd been attacked by some guy on the street recently when she was alone... I can't remember if it was a mugging or what. But just the sound of footsteps behind her terrified her. I felt terrible. But at least when she saw we were girls she was visibly and greatly relieved. I feel bad for all the boys who could have stood behind her and scared her even more.

I have a lot of respect for the guys who cross the street *for* you... its a silent way of acknowledging the reality and doing something to make a girl feel safe... it sort of builds a bond if after crossing the guy makes eye contacts and gives me a nod. Like - I am watching out for what can make you feel safe. Its pretty cool.

Were you actually with me or did I just tell you about that happening? If you were there, it means that it happened another time too when I was by myself: I walked up behind a woman at a light and she turned around startled and said "oh! you shouldn't do that!" and then told me that she had recently been pulled over a fence into a church yard and attacked. She had managed to get away, but was obviously and justifiably shaken.:(

On a happier note, I'm so glad you are loving your job! It's what you and I have always dreamed of and I'm so happy it has come true for you!!:D
