“Shit-ASDFJKLBLAH!” a tall, dark-haired boy yelped when his cauldron started to boil over, jumping back about five feet.  “Shit, shit, shit! Why?! Why does this happen every time this freaking trap of cast-iron hell sees me? I haven’t ever done anything to you, you little sh-”

“Cho Kyuhyun?”

“-ssshhortcake, uh, hi Professor, I was going to say shortcake. Completely and totally can’t stand those things, they’re too…sweet and stuff. Yeah.”

“10 points from Ravenclaw for foul language.”

“But-I’m not even in class-WHY?!” He gave the cauldron a good kick, because it had stopped spazzing and because he could.

The third occupant of the room giggled. “Oh Kyu, maybe you’re just not cut out for this. Make it easier for yourself and buy some chocolate, like normal people do.”

“But I want this to be special!” Kyuhyun whined at Ryeowook, his friend from Gryffindor. “You’re his roommate, right? Didn’t you say he liked creativity?”

Ryeowook sighed. “I think Sungmin prefers it when stuff doesn’t explode in your face. He likes your face.”

Kyuhyun flailed his arms and sputtered incoherently.

“Aw, look at you!” Ryeowook cooed and poked at his face. “Kyuhyunnie’s in loooove!”

“I-it-How old are you, thirteen?!”

“Kyuhyun and Sungmin, sittin’ in a tree-”

“Stop it! Just-just stop it!”

“Oops!”

“Stop it!”

“Oops! They’re saying!” Here, Ryeowook started dancing. (1)

“Omaigawd, stop existing please.” Kyuhyun threw his cookbook down, hastily cleaned up the mess he’d made, and stomped out of the Potions room.

“Don’t be mad, Kyu! Seriously, everyone knows you suck at Potions. Why don’t you do something you’re good at?”

He scoffed. “Yeah, like what? Take his tests for him?” He received a flick to the shoulder in response.

“Something that’s not against the rules. He loves Quidditch, you could surprise him at his game tonight.”

“But I always go to his games!” Kyuhyun buried his face in his hands and squatted down in the middle of the hallway, releasing a groan of exasperation. “What do I do, Wookie?! Valentine’s Day is tomorrow and he’d never go out with me if I can’t even ask him right!”

Ryeowook facepalmed and dragged his desperate friend to the side of the corridor, out of the way of incoming traffic. “Write him a letter?”

“I’m not a girl, Wookie.”

“Sing him a song?”

“AND HAVE THE WHOLE SCHOOL HEAR ME?!”

“Hear what, Kyu?” a new voice said. “You? Because you’re pretty loud, I don’t think you’ll have a problem with people hearing your voice.”

Kyuhyun froze, slowly looking up at the newcomer. “A-aah, hi, Minnie. Um. No. Yes. Uh. Wanna go eat lunch now?”

Both of his friends gave him weird looks. Still, “Alright, Kyu.”

The three of them made their way toward the Great Hall, Ryeowook chatting happily with Sungmin until Yesung joined them and he latched onto him instead. The pair pranced off, arm in arm, leaving a still slightly blushing Kyuhyun behind with Sungmin.

“I have a game tonight,” Sungmin said, smiling up at him. He loved that smile and how perfectly shaped his lips were. And Sungmin was just-so-gorgeous-and how in the world is Kyuhyun going to impress this guy and- “…Kyu? Hello?”

Kyuhyun blinked rapidly and shook the thoughts away. “Ah. I know you do, I’ll be there.”

Sungmin gave him a concerned look. “Are you alright? You’ve been kind of out of it today.”

Today? Try the past few years, ever since he decided to fall for Sungmin. “What? No, nothing’s wrong.” He loved the way Sungmin’s soft black hair fell across his face, framing it and brushing lightly over his dark eyelashes.

“You’re zoning out again.”

“It must be the hunger. Oh hey, we’re here! Let’s go eat. And stuff.” When he was with Sungmin, Kyuhyun’s sense of tact tended to dissolve into nothing.

About an hour later, Kyuhyun resorted to begging. “Help me, Wook,” he pleaded, kneeling before his half annoyed, half amused friend. “I can’t do this.”

“Just tell him what you want to say. You have a way with words; charm him with that wit of yours.”

“No! Wookie, I’m gonna mess up and stuff because you know I can’t talk right around him and he’s gonna hate me for sounding stupid and this will never work-“

“Kyu.”

“-WHAT?”

“Calm down. Just, I dunno, practice on me or something. It’ll be good experience.”

Kyuhyun stared at him. “I don’t even know what to say.”

Ryeowook looked thoughtful. “Tell him you think he’s adorable and sweet and beautiful and you wished he was teddy bear so you could hug him and take him with you everywhere,” he joked. But Kyuhyun was desperate, so he grasped his friend’s shoulders and stared him down anyway.

“Sungmin,” he began mechanically, “you’re adorable and sweet and beautiful. I wish you were a stuffed bunny, because I know you like bunnies more than bears, so I could hug you everywhere. And since you can’t turn into a stuffed bunny, will you be my boyfriend because that way I could still hug you and because I like you a lot?”

“Um. Kyu, that made no sense-hah?“ Both jumped and spun around when they heard a strangled choking sound behind them.

It was Sungmin, face pale and aghast. For a moment they all stared at each other, before Sungmin ground out, “I think Ryeowook is taken, Kyuhyun,” and ran out.

Silence.

“Wookie, I think he thinks I was confessing to you.”

“…”

“Damn.”

“Shouldn’t you be running after him right now?”

“I-yes?” Kyuhyun finally snapped out of his daze and sprinted away, but by that time Sungmin was nowhere to be found.

They didn’t see him again until the Quidditch game, and they couldn’t talk to him then.  It was a cold, windy day, and both teams were wrapped tightly with scarves and it was mostly a sea of maroon and yellow. The weather looked just about as despairing and hopeless as Kyuhyun felt (and as distressed as Sungmin, the captain and seeker of Gryffindor’s team, seem to look).

Both Kyuhyun and Ryeowook watched Sungmin as he shook the hand of Minho, Hufflepuff’s captain. He also exchanged words with the other seeker, a lithe boy by the name of Taemin who smiled at him before shuffling over to Minho and warming his fingers by having the captain breathe onto them. Sungmin stared at his affectionate opponents for a few seconds before abruptly turning away and mounting his broom.

The game started after a few words from the guy with the magic loudspeaker. Sungmin and Taemin hovered in midair, looking for the snitch, while the rest of their teams zoomed across the field around them. Taemin’s eyes immediately narrowed in concentration, darting back and forth in search of a spark of gold.

Sungmin, however, looked completely spaced out and didn’t notice a wayward bludger careening toward him until it collided into his side fifteen minutes into the game.

There was a horrified gasp from the crowd. Kyuhyun felt the sickening wrench of his heart dropping in his chest as he watched Sungmin tumble through the air, managing to reach the ground without pummeling off of his broom. Kyuhyun jumped to his feet and ran toward the field when the nurse rushed forth and put him on a stretcher, clumsily descending the bleachers and pushing people aside because this-this was Sungmin and (he swore a fountain in his head) he was hurt.

“How is he?! Let me through, is he okay? Damn it, let me talk to him!”

But the nurse was stubborn and refused to let the increasingly frantic Kyuhyun through, shouting at him that Sungmin couldn’t be disturbed and to leave him alone until morning.

“Just let me-damn-come back! I just need to-” He felt a warm hand on his shoulder. It gently but firmly pressed against him, and he let it turn him around so he came face to face with Minho.

“He’ll be okay,” Minho offered, with Taemin clutching his other arm by his side and looking on worriedly. “It didn’t look too serious and the nurse’ll be able to fix him.”

“Please ask how he is for me when you see him?” Taemin added.

Kyuhyun felt the energy drain from him and he gave the two a grateful nod, trudging back to where Ryeowook was waiting.

“This is my fault,” he said bitterly, earning a shove from Ryeowook.

“It will be if you don’t quit moping. Where did the confident, snarky Kyu go, huh?” Kyuhyun’s eyes widened when Ryeowook started raging before him. “You are going to think of ways to make this up to him right now, and come morning, your first stop will be the infirmary. And then, you will tell him how you feel and sort this mess out. Do you hear me?”

Kyuhyun stared him.

“I said do you hear me?!”

He pulled Ryeowook into a hug. “Thanks, Wook…”

Ryeowook sighed. “I give up. You deal with this yourself. If you’re not together by noon tomorrow, don’t talk to me.”

Then Yesung showed up out of nowhere and plucked him out of Kyuhyun’s arms.

The next morning, Kyuhyun found himself pacing in front of the infirmary, all jittery and getting weird stares from people who were completely unaccustomed to him acting like that. According to the nurse, Sungmin was completely fine and was only still there because he needed the rest, but now what? After about twenty minutes, a short figure that vaguely had the shape of Ryeowook flung open the door and shoved him inside.

Unfortunately for him, he ended up in a less-than-composed position staring straight at a wide-eyed Sungmin. And because he was all sorts of tactful, the first thing Kyuhyun could think to blurt was, “I wasn’t confessing to Ryeowook.”

Sungmin stared at him more before cocking an eyebrow. “Then what was it? And hello to you too.”

“Hi, it was- Well, first…” Kyuhyun made his way to the bedside before shoving a box of store-bought into Sungmin’s lap. “These are for you? And these,” he pulled a funny-looking bouquet of mismatched flowers out from somewhere in the bag he had dragged with him, stuffing them into a convenient vase on the table.

The other studied the flowers curiously. “Er…thank you? That’s an interesting bouquet, where’d you get it?”

“I transfigured it from the ivy on the Quidditch field,” he mumbled. “Oh, and, this is for you too.” He handed him a mini broomstick model. Sungmin held and stared at it. “Anyway, yeah, um. That confession wasn’t for Ryeowook. It was supposed to be for you, but Wookie told me practice on him because I had no idea what to say and I didn’t know you’d be there…” Here Kyuhyun cleared his throat and sat up straighter (if that was possible) in his chair. “Sungmin, I think you’re really amazing. You’re smart and athletic and nice and I just-I’ve liked you for a really long time. And I-yeah, I like you a lot, and this is kind of embarrassing because I never talk straight when you’re here and now you probably think I’m crazy because I think I sound crazy right now too but will you still-?”

Sungmin silenced him with a laugh and an affectionate touch to his lips. Kyuhyun was slightly red, but Sungmin’s face was completely flushed. “I appreciate that, Kyu, but you don’t have to try so hard, really…” He laughed again and nervously patted his cheeks in an attempt to make it less red. “Because I…I like you too.”

Kyuhyun was shocked silent for a few seconds. Then, “Really? Wait…really? Seriously? You mean it? I…you…”

Someone smacked in him the back of the head; the nurse this time. “Yes, he meant it, you awkward idiot. Now leave the infirmary because I have to run some checkups on Sungmin. Go.”

The two stared into each other’s eyes once more for good measure, the nurse rolling her eyes and saying something about “young love, Merlin, no one escapes it.” Eventually Kyuhyun was chased out, right into view of Ryeowook (who just happened to be standing in front of the door).

“So?”

Kyuhyun just shrugged giddily.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“My life is complete.”
