On Christmas eve I heard a beautiful eleven year old child say the word nigger. He wasn't reprimanded by his parents nor did anyone tell him why it's not appropriate to say

As much as the parens are to blame now, when that child is no longer a child and they speak the same way...they will cease to be beautiful.

I struggled to find a word, a phrase, anything, that accurately described how such things made me feel inside. And the best I could come up with is it "hurts my spirit."
