I totally didn't blog about my awful flight back from Seattle. So let me backtrack a few days.
Thursday January 21I went to the airport 2 hours early (you know- to be safe) and there was no line-up. I got my tickets and went through security all within half an hour. So I sat in a corner by myself and continued reading The Lost Symbol, the new book

The, "bridge" is called a jetway, LOL.
Reason your plane was not move to another gate is because gates are assigned to planes in the air ahead of you. It's easier to leave a landed plane on the tarmac than to deny landing to an aircraft in flight (supplies, fuels, ...) This was what led to the great JetBlu incident at JFK a few years ago.
There was no gate for the planes to return to. When your jet way went offline, the airport had no place to send your plane. Frankly in the old days, the airport would just send a set of stairwheel on wheels to the doors, and you'd just walk down them.
