Trust
Lex stirred in his sleep. Images flashed through his mind as he dreamed. He saw his father, his brother Julian, Morgan Edge…and then Clark. Clark, who saved him by stopping a speeding car with his body before tossing it aside like a toy. Clark, who had come to visit him in the asylum and agreed to help him escape. Clark’s face swam before Lex’s eyes. He reached out in his sleep and his lips began to form his friend’s name. Where was Clark?
The panic following this thought caused Lex to jolt awake. His eyes flew open. Heart racing, he stared ahead for a few seconds, wondering where he was. As the dream fell away, he remembered. He was wrapped in blankets on top of a pile of straw. Clark had taken him to an old farm in the middle of nowhere, where they hid in a small unused barn on the far side of an old couple’s expansive property. They had been there for several days at least, with Clark leaving only to get fresh supplies while Lex slept. He was always back by the time he woke up. The memories were hazy because of the way the drugs had been affecting his mind.
Lex began to slowly sit up. At once, a strong yet gentle hand was on his shoulder. Lex turned, and there was the face from his dream, even more beautiful than he’d remembered. His eyes traveled over Clark and took in his disheveled appearance. Lex was touched that he would give up basic comforts in order to help him. Clark’s hand was still on his shoulder, and Lex covered it with his own. Clark smiled.
“How are you feeling, Lex?” he asked. “You slept for a long time.”
“Much better,” said Lex. “I feel like myself again.”
Clark’s smile widened.
“Good!” He searched Lex’s face with apparent satisfaction. “You look like you’re doing better.”
“How long have we been here?” Lex asked.
“Almost a week. I had to bring you someplace safe until the drugs were out of your system.”
“Thank you Clark,” said Lex, squeezing his hand. “I can’t tell you how much I appreciate everything you’ve done for me. It seems like everyone else in my life is always conspiring against me. You’re the one person I can always count on.”
Clark smiled, but Lex could see concern on his face as well.
“I still remember what I saw you do,” said Lex, guessing where the concern was coming from. “But it doesn’t matter. You’ve been keeping that secret from all your other friends too, haven’t you? I’m sure you were only doing what you thought was best for everyone.” Lex moved his hand from Clark’s and instead put it on his shoulder. “Whatever your intentions, I’m glad I know the truth. You can trust me, Clark. Your friendship is the most important thing in my life.”
Lex could see the relief wash over Clark like a wave. He gave him one of those exceptionally pure, radiant smiles that only Clark was capable of, and Lex knew that everything was all right.
“Thank you, Lex,” said Clark. “I trust you.”
Lex leaned toward Clark. Their eyes locked for a moment that seemed to stretch out for much longer, and then Lex wrapped his arms around the younger man in a hug.
