3. Talk

Jin groaned.

“You’re still thinking about it, aren’t you,”

He propped the phone up on his shoulder. “Yeah.”

A few hours had passed since his fight with Yabu. The second the younger boy collapsed against him, Jin went into overdrive, calling anyone, everyone he could to get help (“Holy fuck, Pi, I think I killed him!”).

Eventually, Yabu’s parents managed to calm him down on the phone and contacted their family doctor for a brief house visit. After a few minutes, the kind old man turned to Jin, proclaimed that the Ya-ya-yah leader was suffering from a mild bruise to the head and stress-related symptoms, gave him a set of pills (“Just for the headache he’s going to have. He needs rest, most of all. You young ones, you work so hard and move so fast, you forget to take a break and R-E-L-A-X. That’s all he needs.”), and was on his way before Jin could say “migraine”.

“…he’s looking better,” Jin murmured, pulling the covers up over Yabu further. “Some color’s returning. He doesn’t look as pale as he did an hour ago.”

“That’s good…how are you?”

“I’m f-”

“Don’t even try it, Bakanishi.”

“You know me too well, don’t you, Tomohisa?”

“I’d be a rotten best friend if I didn’t.”

He grinned. “Yeah, you would.”

“So are you going to stop dancing around the subject?”

Jin stole a glance at Yabu’s sleeping form. “…I really have missed a lot, haven’t I.”

“You were gone for six months, Jin. You’ve just barely gotten back into the cycle of things. It really couldn’t have been avoided.”

Yeah, it could have. I could have stayed, Jin thought dismally. I could have been there for him.

“You had insomnia. You were stressed out beyond belief. You needed that time for yourself.”

His eyes widened. I’ve got to stop voicing my thoughts aloud.

“Yeah, you do,“ Pi laughed softly. “But that’s part of your ‘charm’, I guess.”

Jin sighed. “He didn’t even want to see me, Pi. He didn’t even want to hear me explain.”

“Then take this chance.”

“He won’t be able to hear me!”

“Does it really matter?”

“Yes!”

“Why?”

He froze. “I...I...”

“Do it now, Jin. Or it might never get out.”

“You sure, Pi?”

“Positive. Shoot, Jin, do you have any idea what time it is?”

He turned to the clock on the bedside table. “It’s only 4, Pi.”
“In the morning, Bakanishi.”

Jin turned back to the clock. 4:00 AM. Oh. “Shit, Pi, I completely lost track of time-”

“Don’t apologize, you’re stressed. Sorry though, but I’ve got to run-I need to be at the studio at six for the PV shooting and I still have that paper to do for international marketing.”

“Oh man, Pi, I’m sorry,” Jin replied, scratching his head awkwardly. “I didn’t mean to keep you up all night. Get some sleep if you can, alright? And don’t worry about the paper, I’m sure you’ll get an A.”

“Yeah, tell that to my current grade point average.”

Jin winced. “Sorry, buddy. Hey, are we still on for-”

“7:00 at my place tomorrow. I already got Season 7 on my counter.”

“The Majin Buu saga?” The KAT-TUN star did a mini fist pump. “Score!”

“Yeah, yeah, stop celebrating and let me work, moron.”

“Awww, okay, my little university student,” Jin cooed. “Make Jin proud of you, Tomo-chan!”

“Jin, I swear to-” *click*

He grinned softly. Nothing made life better than making fun of Yamashita Tomohisa, college student, at four in the morning.

“Mmmm…” Yabu groaned softly and turned over on the bed, still fast asleep. His nose wrinkled slightly as a strand of hair tickled it slowly.

Jin reached his hand out to tuck his kouhai’s bangs away from his face. Here goes nothing. “Your hair’s gotten longer, Kota.”

“It’s as soft as ever,” he mused, running his fingers through the silky strands. “You dyed it too. I wonder when that happened…”

“It’s nice though,” Jin smiled softly. “Brown suits you. It brings out your eyes.”

“Get away from me.”

“I used to watch the show though,” He whispered, his fingers still playing with his friend’s hair. “I have it all on Tivo, every episode of
the Ya-ya-yah show. Even when I was in America, I was watching…I didn’t always get a chance to watch but it was comforting, you know? To know that you were only a click away. To know that all I had to do was turn on my TV and see your smile, hear your laugh, hear you sing.”

“Just…just get out of here, alright?”

“Pi’s been keeping me updated on you,” He continued, moving his hand down to trace patterns on Yabu’s cheek absentmindedly.

“He’s the one who told me about today.”

“I can’t stay mad at you.”

“The first thing I felt was pain, I guess,” Jin mused quietly. “ ‘Why didn’t you tell me?’ ‘Why’d I have to find out like everyone else?’…those kinds of questions were running through my head. And then I actually got a good look at you.”

“God, I wish I could though.”

“You’re such a great actor, you know?” He sighed softly and rubbed his eyes. His vision was getting blurry. Must be the new contacts. “You’re fooling everyone…even Hika, from the sounds of it and Hika’s your best friend. But you can’t fool me. I know you, Kota. I know you better than anyone ever has and I know you better than anyone ever will.”

“Anything’s better than being stuck in here with you!”

“Do you know what makes you so damn obvious, Kota?” He reached up to brush aside Yabu’s hair again. “Your eyes. God, do you realize how much your eyes tell me? There’s a whole world in your eyes, Kota, and it’s saying the same thing over and over again, like some kind of fucking mantra.”

“Anything’s better than being stuck in here with you!”

“I’m sorry I didn’t come see you, Kota,” Jin whispered, leaning his head against Yabu’s. “I’m sorry I used every excuse in the book to stay away. But I’m back now. And I’m not leaving, not until I’ve done something about your eyes.”

“Anything’s better than being stuck in here with you!”

“You’re hurting, Kota,” A tear slipped down his cheek and landed on Yabu’s neck. “God, please, why can’t you let me in?”

“Because I’m scared.”

Jin froze. “Kota?”
