... he is seen as unifying by his race while she is seen as divisive by her sex

I have discovered a deep new-found respect for Gloria Steinem. This is hands-down absolutely the best paper I've read about the election to date. I don't know whether I will vote for Clinton or Obama in the California primary (although I better decide soon!), but I certainly would vote for Steinem if she were running after reading this article. I have a deep and abiding love for Hillary. Thanks so much for posting this. :-)

This is interesting to me, because I just recently had a conversation with a (straight) couple I know about politics. The woman and I were both saying that we had an affinity for Clinton but didn't know why, and the man was perplexed as to why we would like her at all.

Not that that's exactly on point. But I feel like every interaction I have with men about Clinton's candidacy ends in them being perplexed as to why I would think she was a viable candidate at all.

I am so torn. I can't get over Obama's deep homophobia. It scares me to the core. He keeps welcoming ex-gay ministers to his events, asking them to speak, and then allowing them to proclaim the good word that queer folks like can be "cured."

And I really can't say that I want a Bush/Clinton dynasty.

But that said, if Bush the Younger had not been president, I would have seen Clinton's run as entirely viable. And I worry deeply that Bill is the reason that Hillary is able to run. Which means that if Hillary does not do it now, there won't be another woman in her position for a long time coming.

Non-partisan archiving of Obama's comments on gay rights:

It seems to me that even if he is homophobic, he is not about to jump into office and ban gay marriage. Maybe I'm missing something?

Also, an op-ed he wrote after the whole McClurkin incident last fall:

I wasn't trying to go after Obama. I'm not really satisfied with either Obama or Clinton.

I think I'm voting for Gloria Steinem.

Now wouldn't that be something. :)

I didn't think you were trying to "go after" Obama...a lot of that info was really for my sake. I haven't been spending a whole lot of time doing nitty gritty research on candidate's platforms.

It's still so early in the process...a part of me is burnt out already on the whole topic!

Krystel, thanks for posting the Steinem article, and Lena, thanks for the links! It's been interesting reading. I certainly like what Obama says about equality, even if he doesn't go all the way to supporting marriage, and about repealing DOMA. Yet I question whether or not to believe him after Krystel's info on the ex-gay ministers. Is he just courting the born-again vote with those speakers? Or is his pro-equality rhetoric just courting me ( ... )
