Chapter 6

Justice . . .

After all that had happened, Adam couldn’t help but to feel relieved about the way things had gone. Kris had gotten injured, but he would be alright within a few days, it would be alright eventually. All of it. Adam had checked upon him many times during the night, and even though Kris had responded every time, Adam was fairly certain Kris wouldn’t remember anything in the morning.

Kris was everything Adam had hoped he would be. Adam felt a strong need to protect him, make sure no one was going to hurt him ever again. Very soon, the boy would be his mate. And more importantly, Adam could see himself falling in love with him.

Smiling, Adam stretched his legs, pulling Kris more firmly against his chest. The human was still asleep, and he looked so peaceful that Adam didn’t dare waking him up. It was the morning of their wedding day, just mere hours until the ceremony was set to begin. Adam guessed they had only minutes before his servants entered the room and all the preparations and hassle started.

Kris stirred, yawning loudly, and Adam almost chuckled, smiling even wider. The boy was too cute. Kris turned to face Adam, blinking rapidly, eyelids still heavy from sleep.

“Are you ready to get married?” Adam questioned, knowing there were still many unanswered questions in Kris’ mind.

“Yeah, I think I am,” Kris answered, a crooked smile ghosting his lips, and Adam had an urge to kiss him again, make him tremble like a leaf in his arms.

Before Adam had a chance to do anything, the doors opened, and three people entered the bedroom. They were three of his servants; Alli, Katy and Lil. Groaning, Adam rolled his eyes, annoyed by the interruption.

“Your Highness, some of the royal human guests have arrived early. They are requesting your presence,” Katy spoke.

“They are here already? Shit,” Adam said, acknowledging that the tone of his voice was tinted with not only annoyance, but also with nervousness.

Adam truly didn’t want to leave Kris with the women, but the matters needed to be taken care of. He needed to see that the guests got settled and that everyone was happy. There was no chance for fuck ups right now, there was just too much at stake.

Kris was studying him, his expression curious, and Adam smiled, shifting closer before taking the boy’s hand into his own. It felt so good to touch him. And soon, so very soon, Adam would be able touch him the way he really wanted to.

“Kris, I need to go. I don’t want to leave you, but your king has arrived and, like you heard, he’s expecting me. Is it alright if I leave you with the girls? They will help you bathe and get ready for the ceremony,” Adam rambled quickly, watching Kris’ reactions, hoping he wouldn’t be nervous about being alone with his servants.

Kris’ calmness was a surprise to him.

“Yes, it’s ok. I’ve met the king a few times and I know he can be… um… demanding. And a bath sounds nice. So yeah, it’s alright,” Kris mumbled, blushing a little.

“Good. It will be a few hours before the shamans arrive and we will be able to begin. I’ll see you downstairs after you’ve gotten yourself ready. You can ask anything from the girls and I make sure someone delivers food for you,” he said, bending in to kiss Kris briefly on the lips.

He kept the press of his lips light and soft, and Kris just melted into him, sighing. Yeah, it was good. It was really good.

Reluctantly, Adam pulled back from the boy whom had already driven him mad with desire. Within the next 12 hours, Adam would show him what it was to be with a werewolf, undo all the fears he had about the mating. And Adam knew Kris wanted him too. He could smell it, sense it in Kris’ physical reactions.

Adam made his way to his wardrobe, and chose a regular outfit that was suitable for meeting the royal guests, knowing it would be better to change into the wedding attire a little bit later. The makeup would have to wait too. He knew Kris was watching him get dressed, and when he was done with his black outfit, he turned, finding that Kris was truly watching him, cheeks flushed, and the scent of his arousal, God, it was intoxicating.

“Kris? I see you soon, but I need to go now,” he said, smiling, wishing he could go back into the bed with the human.

“Yeah, I know,” Kris whispered quietly.

“Promise me something,” Adam started, and Kris raised his eyebrows, his expression anticipatory.

“Just promise me that you tell someone immediately if you don’t feel well. It’s killing me that I need to go and leave you here.”

“Adam, I’m fine. Just go,” Kris grinned, but Adam was able to see a hint of nervousness in his eyes.

“We’ll take care of him, your Highness.” The voice belonged to Alli, a girl with red hair and a spicy temper. Adam was lucky to have her as a servant, she was a real blessing.

“You do know where Kris’ outfit is, don’t you? And make sure the cook prepares a breakfast for him,” Adam instructed, even though he knew Alli’s answer.

“Adam, believe me. We’ll take care of it,” Alli told him, rolling her eyes.

“Alright.”

Adam tried to hurry as he rushed through the long hallways, not stopping when servants passed by to ask how they could help him with the arrangements. He’d been told that the king was waiting for him in the ceremony hall. If the man had already heard what had happened the day before, he would presumably be furious, and then, Adam would have to appease him in some way.

As he stepped inside, Adam saw that there was a real fuss going on in the great hall. His servants were making last minute decorations, running around like mad, placing flowers everywhere. The group of royal human guests was sitting near the throne, and Adam was able to see that his brother was keeping them company. Neil was talking with the queen, chatting and laughing casually. His brother never took anything seriously.

Some of the guests from his own bloodline were also there, and Adam greeted them as he approached the humans. The king noticed him and stood up.

“Adam! I was wondering what was taking so long for you to get your ass here,” the king yelled loudly. The man had never been keen on formalities.

“Eric, it’s good to see you here. I was with Kris and I came here as soon as I could. Have my servants gotten you settled?” he queried, nodding at the other humans as a greeting.

“They’ve been most kind to us. But, could you please tell me what the fuck happened to Kris yesterday!?”

It was the question Adam had been dreading the whole morning, knowing in the back of his head that the moment would eventually come. How could he explain that his own priests had conspired behind his back? More importantly, how could he solve the situation without spilling blood?

“I don’t know what you’ve already heard, but… you know that I have ten priests, right? Well, five of them did something unforgivable last night. They erroneously thought that Kris had escaped… and that the fulfillment of the prophecy was jeopardized. So they captured him without asking questions, hurting him in the process,” he explained cautiously, watching as the man’s face got red as a beetroot as he kept talking. It got without saying that it wasn’t a good sign.

“Oh, I think I heard the whole story already. I demand that the ones responsible for Kris’ injuries are going to be punished! And considering the severity of the crime, I think they should all lose their heads for what they’ve done. They could’ve killed him!” Eric roared.

Adam knew the human was right; his priests could have accidentally killed Kris. He also knew he had to deal with the five of them, most preferably publicly, so that everyone would see that he had things under control, so that no one would question his authority or power. He needed to be the strong ruler his father had taught him to be.

“I know. I think we better deal with my priests right away. It’s better if Kris doesn’t need to see them ever again,” Adam stated, peering around as he searched for the nearest guard. He was happy to see the chief of his guards, Tommy, standing near the doors.

After a couple of quick, subtle glances between the two of them, the blond man approached, nodding politely at the guests.

“Sir?” Tommy asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Bring them here. Let’s get it over with,” Adam whispered quietly, knowing that his friend knew exactly what he meant.

Tommy merely nodded, turning towards the exit and then disappearing into the hallway.

Several moments later, when Tommy returned to the ceremony hall, he was accompanied by two other guards and the five priests that had injured Kris the previous night. The priests were visibly shaking with fear; they knew that Adam was going to punish them for what they had done.

Considering, Adam went to sit on his throne, slumping into the black cushions. He knew what needed to be done, the priests needed to get punished, it was only fair, but he didn’t like it, didn’t really want to hurt his priests, his longtime servants. And still, it needed to be done. They had harmed Kris and it made Adam furious.

It would’ve been a lot easier if everyone didn’t know what had happened to Kris. But, now it seemed that the whole world had heard about the crime, and Adam knew the crowd would want to see blood flow, witness justice taking place. Silently praying, Adam prepared to do what had to be done.

“Could I have everyone’s attention, please,” Adam said in a loud voice, loud enough that everyone in the hall undoubtedly heard him.

Immediately, the crowd went silent, and they turned to look at him, waiting for him to continue.

“I’m aware that word goes around fast in this castle, even in this city. You all know what happened to the chosen one last night. And you also know who it was that did it,” Adam started calmly, before turning to face the five priests who were hiding in the corner, still surrounded by the guards.

“Andrew, Bill, Zane, Danny, and Joe, you made a bad mistake. You conspired behind my back and you hurt the one who is going to bring peace into the world.”

“They deserve to be beheaded! Kris bled yesterday, today they need to bleed, pay for what they did! It’s what your law says!” Eric screamed, interrupting Adam while he was still talking.

The next one to scream was Andrew.

“Your Highness, please. We thought we were doing a good deed by bringing Kris here. And yes, it got out of hands, but he kept running away from us!” the priest yelled, panicking.

“Silence, all of you!” Adam roared, and waited until it was quiet again. “I’ve heard enough and I’ve made my decision.”

Brows crinkled with sadness, Adam turned to look at the priests again. Sometimes, it really, truly sucked to be the king.

“The law doesn’t give me a lot of choices. What you did to Kris is unforgivable and the fact that you hurt him behind my back makes it treason. Eric is right; I could have you executed for what you did. But, it is my wedding day, the day when the war finally ends, a beginning of a brand new era, and I’m not going to start it by killing my longtime servants.”

Adam took a deep breath before continuing.

“You will be whipped in the town square, so that you’ll bleed just as Kris did. After that, you need to leave the city. If you ever return, you shall lose your heads,” Adam announced, and the priests hung their heads, defeated.

The crowd, all the guests and his servants and guards, started cheering wildly and Adam sighed in relief, knowing he had made the right decision. Justice had been served and no one had to die.

Shaking a little, Adam left the hall, feeling relieved and still somehow drained. Neil followed him, a concerned look upon his face.

“Adam, are you alright?”

“Yes, I’m fine,” he assured his brother.

“Good, because I heard that the shamans and rest of the guests just arrived. That means we are good to go, we can begin the ceremony. You need to go and get yourself ready,” Neil said, smiling.

Adam closed his eyes, feeling a rush of joy wash over him. It was really happening. Within hours, the peace treaty would be signed. And before the silver moon would rise, Kris would be his.
