Summary: Tommy is tired of his life and travels to a secluded hotel to clear his head. Weather reports say there’s a killer storm coming in and it’s likely to cut the hotel’s connections to the outside world. The storm does just that, and it also brings uninvited guests who happen to be vampires. What happens to Tommy in the hands of these dangerous creatures?

Chapter 1

Calm before the storm. . .

Tommy woke up in the bath only to find that his fingertips were starting to turn into raisins. He glanced at an antique clock hanging from the marble wall. Shit. The dinner would be served in half an hour so he had slept nearly two hours in the tub. How was it even possible that the water was still bubbly and warm?

He rinsed, dried himself and brushed his wet fringe. His long hair was blond and it kept hanging a bit in front of his face. It sometimes offered a cover from the outside world, like a barrier. The fun part of came to life when he performed, it was just so fun to toss around. In this place, his hair wouldn’t matter, though.

Tommy hurled back to the bedroom and quickly made himself presentable. He gazed at the lake view again, then turned towards the door and slid to the corridor leading downstairs. The dinner was already being served when he arrived.

‘Motherfucker’, was the only coherent thought in his mind as he admired the sheer size of the main hall. If it had been dark, the place might have been slightly intimidating. The hall was high and so were all the doors and the curtains. The windows there were at least three meter high, and if it hadn’t been for all the white marble, the antique vibe of the place would have won. Then it all could’ve been downright creepy.

There were two other people sitting in the corner table, they were in their thirties and seemed to be a couple. ‘The other two guests here.’ Tommy wondered to himself what those people were doing here. He guessed the manager had given the lecture about the storm for them too.

“Good evening sir. Where would you like to sit? There’s room for three hundred people so the space is not a problem.” The voice belonged to a grey haired man whose smile seemed genuinely friendly.

“Good evening. Maybe next to the windows?” Tommy answered, gesturing towards the tables there.

“Excellent choice.”

The dinner was served to him, and he ate in silence. The couple left soon after he had arrived and the cook disappeared right after Tommy had assured him that he wouldn't need anything more.

Again all the memories invaded his mind. This time, the memories were of his father. His father had died a couple of years earlier, completely unexpected. That was when the rest of his family had fallen apart. Time passed, but it seemed that the grief stayed no matter what happened to Tommy in his life.

When he came back from his thoughts, he finished eating and went to the receptionist, Ann, and asked if he could have a drink. She made it reluctantly, rolling her eyes when Tommy asked for ice.

‘Impolite bitch’, Tommy hissed to himself as he made his way to the terrace he had seen earlier. He sat down on one of the benches, taking a sip of his drink.

Tommy sat outside for the next hours, clearing his head, until the sun started to set down. As the sun turned orange and started to disappear behind the mountains, Tommy realised that he still wasn’t any wiser when it came to his life. There were a couple of dark clouds in the distance that didn’t seem threatening, at least not yet.

What he came here for? He came to this sanctuary to escape the world, to escape even the ones who tried to help him. He came here to find out if he had a place in the world. He still had fire inside him but the world just kept on suffocating it relentlessly.

He went to sleep feeling exhausted and the next time he woke up, it was already 4 pm the next day. His sleeping rhythm was always fucked up, like as if he couldn’t get up in the morning.

‘Fuuuuuck! This vacation is way too expensive to spend in bed!’ Just as he was cursing to himself, he heard a massive roar echoing behind the windows. The storm. That’s what woke him up!

Tommy pushed the curtains open, noticing that it was somewhat dark outside. Sinister looking clouds dimmed the northern sky. The trees were bending in the wind and it seemed like it had already started to rain. How bad could it get?

Suddenly, a lightning blazed above the lake and the wind started to pick up more speed, howling more now. The waves on the surface of the water suddenly seemed high, and as Tommy glanced at the dock, he noticed that something wasn’t quite right. There had been a ten meter long vessel at the dock the day before when Tommy had arrived.

‘Where is it now?’

Another flash lit the sky for a second, and there was a bit of hail mixed with the falling rain. This might be just a bit serious. It was possible that he should have postponed his vacation.

He decided it was best to go and join the staff for maybe some info on the storm. Just as the reached the stairs, he heard screaming.

“What do you mean the boat is fucking gone?! It can’t be gone! No one has left here, where the fuck is it?!”

The voice definitely belonged to Kevin, and the one whose ability to hear was in jeopardy, was Ann. “Listen to me! Do you seriously expect me to go and search that damned boat in that storm? Why can’t Eric go?” Ann yelled, her words filled with anger.

Tommy shifted a bit so he wouldn’t be spotted.

“Because he still has three guests who want their dinner at 6! Now get on with it bitch!” Kevin hissed.

Maybe talking to either of them now wasn’t such a good idea. Instead, the musician decided to head for the main hall. He guessed that the other guests and Eric, the cook, might be there. And if not, he’d figure it out. Tommy had been right, the couple was sitting again in that same corner table, and Eric was behind the catering tables preparing the meal.

“Good evening mister Ratliff. How are you doing?” Eric politely enquired.

Tommy walked closer to the man who seemed to be the only friendly person in the hotel. “I’m feeling ok. I guess it’s just the storm that made me think a bit.”

“That may be the storm of the decade, but luckily it’s not the storm of the century. There’s no need to worry, these walls have been standing here for almost a hundred years.”

It seemed that Eric wasn’t even slightly concerned, even though the sound of the nature that raged outside kept getting louder and louder as they spoke.

“What about the windows? Do they hold? And what about that boat the others were rambling about?” All of a sudden, Tommy started questioning. Was he nervous? A little bit. Interested? Hell yes. Scared to the bone? No.

Someone who had a self-destruct side to himself wasn’t so capable of fearing for his life. Not deep down.

“The windows are very strong, they can take the wind, but they will break, of course, if a three falls through. And what comes to the boat, the waves must have untied it. It’s probably just floating around somewhere; they’ll find it after the storm has passed,” Eric told him and continued to fidget with his bowls.

Tommy gazed outside, squinting his eyes. For a second, he thought he saw something moving behind the windows. It must have been Ann getting soaked outside, trying to locate the boat.

“I should check the latest weather report,” Tommy muttered half to himself. Eric turned to face him with an amused look on his face.

“No point in even trying. The connections don’t work very well even when the weather is good. Now the lines are completely dead.”

Tommy raised an eyebrow and dug his phone from his pocket. He turned the power on and waited for the signal. Nothing.

‘Interesting.’

The couple in the corner was scrutinizing Tommy with their looks, as if he was some kind of an enemy. Seriously, was something wrong with these people; was he in some kind of twilight zone?

He sat down at one of the tables and just waited. Suddenly there was a loud crash outside.

“That was a tree,” Eric laughed, as if it didn’t bother him at all.

Ann and Kevin appeared in the doorway and they were whispering to each other. They seemed almost as if they were scared about something. How could the storm make them so jittery when Eric didn’t seem mind to at all?

Shrugging to himself, he fetched a glass of water and wine and waited for the meal to be served. Just before he was about to start eating, Kevin and Ann appeared into the hall. They still looked tense but determined to have supper with their guests. Everyone else ate in an uneasy silence, except Eric, who was glancing around the room quite often. How strange.

‘What the hell is going on?’ Tommy shook his head and finished the plate in front of him.

The lights blinked.

“Bloody hell!” Kevin yelled out his annoyance.

Then the lights went completely dark. Tommy could hear Ann’s panicked voice across the space.

“Don’t worry, the generator will start soon enough, I guess a tree has cut the power line.” Kevin was trying to reassure everyone, but Tommy guessed he did it mainly for Ann.

It took approximately ten seconds before the lights flickered back on. But it was only a few lamps and they were quite dim. Eric started lighting up some candles that he produced from his workstation. The cook had candles in the same space where he kept his pots and pans? How odd.

“Everything is just fine. Just… just continue eating.” Kevin’s voice was definitely shaking now.

Tommy lifted his wine glass to his lips and took a big sip. The place started to look completely different now. The few dim lights on the walls and the candles on the tables created an eerie atmosphere, the vibe like straight from a horror movie.

“Let’s get out of here,” the woman spoke in the corner table, gesturing to her husband, or possibly her boyfriend. The man just shook his head and continued destroying the huge pint of beer he had in front of him.

Eric was on the other side of the room, where there was a stage for the performers who used to play in the hotel during the tourist season. It was not really a stage; it was more like a two step high platform. The cook was leaning to the wall and kept on looking around. What was he waiting for? Tommy observed everyone’s reactions and noticed that they all acted a little abnormal.

Suddenly, there was an echoing sound.

All the hairs in Tommy’s neck shot up and he jumped a little, hitting his knee to the table.

“Fuck me sideways,” he muttered to himself and started rubbing the damaged spot. Everyone’s heads were turning around in order to comprehend where the sound came from. Tommy was happy neither of the girls screamed. Screaming wouldn’t do any good for them anyway.

Another sound, this time it was a whisper.

‘Fuck, what the actual fucking hell.’ This holiday seemed to be getting weirder and weirder by the minute.

Kevin shot up from his chair but didn’t say anything. There were four large doors in the main hall. All of them open. The fact that the power was off, made it impossible to see into the hallways and corridors. Feeling as if he was being watched, Tommy kept on staring at one particular exit.

He was being watched.

There was something in the doorway, Tommy could see it now. All the muscles in his body tensed and he couldn’t even blink. The shadowy figure came just a bit closer and now Tommy was able to make out the features. From the darkness he could make out a face.

A pale face with perfect features. And was the man wearing make up? The figure inched just a bit closer and now Tommy could make out that the man’s hair was just as dark as the shadows, a spiky artwork, and that he was completely dressed in black. The long leather jacket the man was wearing was enough to create a threatening vibe.

‘Am I the only one who sees him?’

The stranger’s lips curled into a small smirk in the darkness. There was a bright flash of thunder and then Tommy was suddenly able to see.

Oh. Many figures. More than one at every exit.

The women’s screams told Tommy that he was not the only one aware of the strangers, but he couldn’t take his eyes off one particular man. His blood felt like ice flowing in his veins.

‘Is this how I’m gonna die?’ He thought and the stranger smirked again, raising an eyebrow.

“Good evening ladies and gentlemen!” yelled a brown-haired man as he stepped into the hall. With that, the strangers started to approach them.

Tommy quickly counted twelve people, noticing that at least half of them were carrying guns. He instantaneously decided it was best to just sit still and see what was coming because there was no way anyone could run now. Somewhere in the back of his head he was aware that Ann was still shrieking as for the other woman was only gasping now.

Tommy’s eyes shot back to the tall raven haired man, finding that the man was still scrutinizing Tommy from head to toes with his piercing eyes. From the corner of his eyes the bassist could see that the brown haired stranger had walked in front of Eric and was now hugging him.

“Good to see you, Kris,” Eric beamed at the man in front of him.

“Could you get the power back on?” Kris, the brown-haired man, asked.

“Sure, right away.” With that, Eric slipped past the armed men and women and disappeared into the hallway.

“You!!!”

Tommy turned to look at Kevin who was now on his feet screaming at Kris.

“It can’t be! You… You!! The last time I saw you…”

“I was dead?” Kris approached Kevin with steady steps and Kevin backed off a little. “Oh believe me Kevin, my old friend, I am.”

Now how the hell had Tommy gotten himself into a situation like this? Oh yeah, his existential crisis had been the trigger. He glanced at the man in the long leather jacket again. There was something about him. He was beautiful.

‘Wow did I just consider another man attractive, when there are like half a dozen guns in the room?’ Just as Tommy had thought of that, the pale stranger smiled to himself but didn’t look at Tommy this time.

Then all the lights flickered back, making Tommy jump a bit. Shit. This was not the time to get jumpy and draw attention to himself. Not before he understood what the fuck was going on. All the other strangers were just silently standing while Kris was doing all the talking.

“Hello Ann, how’ve you been? Stabbing anyone in the back lately?” Kris made a face of disgust as he spat the words.

“Please, please don’t hurt us. It was a long time ago and we are so sorry. I was so young back then. Please don’t shoot us.” Ann was begging for her life.

Suddenly the couple in the corner table bolted towards one of the exits. They didn’t get far though. The man soon found himself staring at a barrel of a gun at the same time as one of the women slammed his girlfriend to the wall.

Kris laughed.

“Of course, someone had to try,” Kris said without a hint of surprise in his voice.

Suddenly the black haired man was moving. He walked next to Kris with a smirk on his face and then gave the brunette a small handgun.

“Thank you, Adam.”

‘Adam.’ Tommy shuddered as he thought of the name.

Instantly there was a pair of eyes glued to him, a pair of stunningly light blue eyes. Adam was looking straight into his eyes and all Tommy was able to do was gulp. The guy couldn’t seriously sense what Tommy was thinking, could he?

Adam looked away first and Tommy tried to get himself together. He saw that Kris was now taking slow, determined steps towards Kevin and Ann.

“Ten years. Ten years I’ve been planning for this, dreaming about this. Ten years without her, Kevin!” Kris’s voice roared just like the storm outside.

Tommy could easily see that Kevin was shaking and Ann had slumped on her knees on the floor. Kris stopped right in front of Kevin.

“Shoot me then, Kris. Just do it!” Kevin yelled, and with that, Kris dropped the gun to the floor.

A loud hiss echoed in the hall and Kris bared his teeth.

‘Jesus fucking Christ!’ Those were without a doubt a pair of fangs! Before Tommy could even blink, Kris was attacking Kevin’s throat.

Kevin was screaming and fighting in vain, blood starting to soak the collar of his shirt. Tommy couldn’t believe what he was seeing, it couldn’t really be happening. He jumped on his feet only to find that his knees were trembling slightly. The other guests and Ann were screaming in horror but the musician kept quiet.

He glanced at Adam only to drop his jaw. Adam looked hungry. His mouth was open, baring a gleaming pair of sharp fangs. The light blue eyes were even lighter now, almost silvery. Tommy swallowed and Adam looked straight into his eyes. Fuck.
